HYGGE

ByCharlotte Abrahams

Anna Valentine, Publishing Director of Non-Fiction, Orion Publishing Group has bought World rights from Clare Hulton for HYGGE,which is to be published as a hardback and eBook, priced £12.99/£7.99, on 20th October 2016.

Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) is the hot new lifestyle philosophy that everyone is talking about. The concept has been firmly embedded in Danish culture since the 18th Century and loosely centres around the notion of cosiness and cherishing yourself. Candlelight is hygge; bakeries are hygge; not denying yourself that pastry is hygge; dinner with friends is hygge. It celebrates experiences, rather than possessions; it’s about being kind to yourself and treasuring a sense of community. World happiness polls consistently rank Denmark as one of the globe’s happiest countries. This book asks whether those two things are connected.

With two divorces behind her and her 50th birthday rapidly approaching, journalist Charlotte Abrahams embarks on a journey to happiness through hygge. A lifestyle and interiors specialist, Charlotte has long been fascinated by hygge and explores its history and role in Scandinavian culture – its influence on everything from food and furniture design (is hygge the reason Scandi designers have always made comfort a top priority, a fact that has ensured its on-going international popularity?) to the importance the Danes put on spending time with each other. This is juxtaposed with Charlotte’s own attempts, as an English woman, to embrace the hygge way of life. Under the guidance of an expert in the field, Charlotte examines the impact on her home, her daily life and her mental health, resulting in a beautifully told, stylish and inspiring book that will enrich your life.

Anna Valentine said: ‘There was an audible cheer in the office when I acquired this book – hygge has captured everyone’s imagination and Charlotte is the perfect author to bring it to life. Being the antithesis of lifestyle trends that centre on denial (whether that’s no sugar, no gluten, no possessions), hygge is clearly a philosophy we can all get on board with. It is reaching its zeitgeist moment, and this book will lead the way. ’
