Who Should Attend: This training is intended for clinicians, case managers and peers in the publicly funded substance use and co-occurring disorder field. It contains content appropriate for participants at the beginning and/or intermediate levels. Each training location is limited to a maximum of 40 participants.

The two day curriculum consists of an in-depth look at the theoretical foundations of the Criteria in order to effectively educate managed care entities, providers and network support staff. Participants will learn about the historical foundations of the Criteria, guiding principles, six dimensions, levels of service and continued stay, and transfer and discharge criteria. All participants will receive an in-depth training journal to guide the training experience.

By the end of this training participants will be able to:

  • Review paradigm shifts and evolutions in generations of care that led to The ASAM Criteria
  • Apply The ASAM Criteria’s decisional flow
  • Identify and describe the six ASAM Criteria assessment dimensions
  • Rate risk and severity across all dimensions
  • Identify services and modalities needed, as well as treatment planning approaches
  • Identify appropriate patient levels of care
  • Review special populations and emerging research about addiction
  • Develop strategies to overcome real-world barriers to implementing The ASAM Criteria

Community Mental Health Association is approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) to sponsor educational training for professional certification. MACMHB maintains the responsibility for the program and content. Substance abuse professionals participating in this training will receive 14 (Specific) contact hours.

Attendees must turn in their evaluation/attestations for the training session on the last day of the training.

Carbon forms are NO longer used for certification.

Certificate Awarded: Your Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to you direction within 30 business days after verification of your attendance.

National Accreditation Rules: National Accreditation rules indicate that if you are over five (5) minutes late or depart early, you forfeit your continuing education hours for the entire training. Please note that this is a National rule that CMHAM must enforce or we could lose our provider status to provide continuing education hours in the future. This rule will be strictly followed.

Evaluation: There will be an opportunity for each participant to complete an evaluation of the course and the instructor. About the Presenter: Scott Boyles, LAC, MINT Trainer, Senior National Training Director, Train for Change, Inc.

Scott Boyles is a licensed addiction counselor and the Senior National Training Director for Train For Change Inc. For more than three decades, he worked at all levels in the behavioral health field: as an inpatient and intensive outpatient counselor, clinical director and director. Boyles has passion and expertise in system-change approaches to support implementation and use of evidence-based practices. He has been a consultant and trainer, with a focus on the ASAM Criteria, individualized treatment planning, clinical documentation, the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change and motivational enhancement strategies for more than two decades. His consulting work has evolved from years as a clinical supervisor and includes group and individual coaching. Boyles is known for providing informative, engaging and entertaining trainings, which include practical, real-world applications.
