By Emilee Giacondino and Leah Sause
Q: Do you think the reconfiguration will be good for our town’s budget?
A: Yes, it will save money and teachers
Q: How many teachers from each school are getting laid off?
A: 31/2 teachers system-wide at the elementary level will be losing their jobs.
Q: Is it happening for sure?
A: Yes,
Q: Do you think the reconfiguration is a good idea?
A: Yes, it is a different idea. Highland will be focusing on the same thinking as K-2 will work on reading and writing because they’re just learning how to do that. 3-5 is learning about math, technology, social studies and reading non-fiction.
The Art of Comics by James Michaud
In Art, we are designing comics. We are going to copy the comics that we brought in. Then, we’ll add our own words and the project will be complete. But, it will feel really different when we finish as Mr. Herpok will not be there to congratulate us since he’s out on a medical leave.
Nature’s Art by
Leah Sause
A field of flowers
With wonderful powers
Filed with beauty and grace
As I walk through it with wonderful pace
Sun flowers grow as queens
But tulips are the ones who lead
Lilacs grow as kings
But snap dragons have the springs
I walk though this field
With great appeal
I’ll come back later
As I love Nature.
Loser by Leah Sause
Loser is the book that Mrs. Cavanaugh just finished reading during snack-time. It was about a boy named, Donald Zinkoff. He’s kind of klutzy and not very coordinated or a good student. But, when a little girl, named Claudia, goes missing, Donald proves that he is really a special person because he looks everywhere for her during a terrible snow storm.
Yalesville Little League by James Michaud
Everybody’s pumped up for spring ball, and after a long winter, we’re finally ready to play. Reigning champions, Frenchy’s (my team) are back to make a statement and their Championship opponent, Thurston’s, will also make a tough outing. The eight teams in the Majors are Tom’s Barber, Frenchy’s Auto Repair, Kolvac’s Insurance, Thurston’s Foods, Superior Forklift, Michael’s Trattoria, Tech Circuits, and Hunter’s Pool. Some players to watch this year are Zach Hart (Thurston’s), Turner French (Frenchy’s), and Jake Mckenzie (Michael’s)

Can You Imagine? By Emilee Giacondino
Can you imagine a zebra without stripes,
An airplane with no flight?
A pea without the pod,
Massachusetts without Cape Cod?
A rainbow without blue,
Elmer’s without its glue?
The alphabet with no B,
A lock without a key?
A world without oceans,
A witch without potions?
Winter without a glove
A person who doesn’t love?
Silly Bands by Emilee Giacondino
Silly Bands are the new thing. They’re rubber bands that come in different shapes and colors. Every fifth grader has at least one of these bands. In the last auction, Mrs. Cavanaugh is going to auction a package off. Some packs are in the shapes of farm animals, sports, princess, and some are glow in the dark. Some schools have banned the Silly Bands because students are playing with them too much. So, remember than when you’re in school!
All-Town Band by Amin Nadirali
There are many kids in Mrs. Cavanaugh’s class who are in the All-Town Band and Chorus. In All-Town, we have met a lot of new friends. Some people were a little off-key when playing, but most people were really good. It was very loud and the ground shook because of the bass drum and the gong. All-Town was awesome!
Last Assembly by Leah Sause
The fifth graders are performing a song on Responsibility by David Woodward at the last Kids’ for Character Assembly. We’re also going to have three skits. Our class skit is about Harriet Beecher Stowe who will be played by Sarah Pazik with her father being played by James Michaud. The narrator will be me! Good luck to all!
End of Year Activities by Emilee Giacondino
Field Day is coming soon! I know all of us are excited. Hopefully, it will be a nice sunny day because for the last two years, we have had to stay inside because of the rain. This year there will be inflatables, fun games, and good food!
Soon, we will go to Mountain Mist-rain or shine. We’ll start with different team-building activities, and then have lunch. For the afternoon, we can choose what to do like go swimming, play tennis or play whiffle ball. We’ll be going on June 11th!
Jokes by James Michaud
Yo mama’s so dumb that on her computer, when it said, “You’ve got mail,” she went outside to wait for the postman!
Percy Jackson by Amin Nadirali
The Percy Jackson series is awesome! There are five books in the series about mythical creatures and gods! Pick up a copy, maybe you’ll love it too!
Classics by Emilee Giacondino
For Reading, we are enjoying some of the Illustrated Classics. Some of the titles are The Three Musketeers, The Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, Heidi, and many more. These are great books to finish out the school year!
Perfect Game by James Michaud
On May 9th, 2010, Dallas Braden of the Oakland Athletics pitched a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays. A perfect game is when a pitcher gets 27 outs in a row without allowing a walk or a hit. It was the 2nd perfect game in the Athletics history and the 19th perfect game in MLB history! That was a real accomplishment!
