●Important Message regarding Spanish and Art for 2017-2018: We would like to inform you of some program shifts that will be occurring for the 2017-2018 school year. We are committed to ensuring that our students receive a visual arts curriculum at El Segundo Unified. The art program will be shifting in a new and exciting direction. For the 2017-2018 school year, we are exploring the possibility of partnering with a professional arts program that would bring consistency across the two school sites and would support teachers in the art instruction in the classrooms. We would like to continue involving parents in our arts program and welcome any suggestions you have. Thank you so much for your input, time, and volunteerism over the past many years.
During this school year we piloted weekly, introductory Spanish lessons for our 4th and 5th graders. This program was developed in order to complement foreign language at the middle school level due to the constraints of an A/B schedule at ESMS that limited the time that students had to study Spanish. ESMS has made changes to their schedule that will address this issue and will increase the amount of Spanish and elective courses to be on par with core subjects. This means that students will have 3 years of Spanish and elective courses, rather than the 1.5 years in the current schedule. The benefit of three years of Spanish clearly outweighs the weekly introduction at the elementary level. Therefore, the elementary Spanish program is being discontinued and the resources reallocated to ESMS to offer a comprehensive Spanish program.
Respectfully,
Ms. Martha Monahan (CSS Principal) and Dr. Alice Lee (RSS Principal)
