Introduction:

Welcome to OPM5202 Operations Management .It is a great pleasure to have all of you in my class. I have been at University Of Illinois in SpringfieldinUSA for 31 years and served as a chair of department and MBA director for several times and my work was recognized last May at the Faculty Recognition. I taught in graduate and undergraduate online and on ground many different courses and I have done a number of consulting for private and public services and presented many research papers at a local and national level. I will share my life experiences and teachings with all of you. My goal is for you to learn and be able to apply the topics in this course in the real world. Course Description:

Introduction to operations management techniques includes their application to functional areas of the business enterprise and operations control. Topics include product and production planning, facilities layout and location planning, project evaluation and control, linear programming, waiting line and inventory modeling, production control, and quality planning and control.

Course Objectives:

  • To introduce students to the foundation of knowledge in contemporary operations management.
  • To fulfill, in part, the prerequisite requirements for the capstone course BUS 488 Strategic Management and Leadership

Prerequisites:

Business Statistics and Advanced Mathematics or equivalents

As stated in your catalog, it is your responsibility to assure that you have the appropriate prerequisites to take this course. For business students who take this course without the prerequisites, you will receive a grade, but YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT HOURS TOWARD YOUR DEGREE. If we find you are taking this course without prerequisites, you will be dropped from the class roster.

This course has been designed to achieve the following cognitive learning outcomes: Students should be able to discuss coherently, demonstrate and use in correct context, key operations management concepts, processes and specialized terms in the following areas:

Managing operations in a global environment
  • Introduction to Operations Management (OM) and operations strategies including global strategies for manufacturing and service

Designing production and service systems
  • Demand forecasting for products and services
  • Designing and implementing production and service operations systems and processes
  • Project management and control
  • Capacity, location and facility layout planning
  • Human resources and job design

Planning the strategic use of resources
  • Allocating scare operations resources using linear programming and other optimization techniques

Managing operations
  • Inventory and supply chain management
  • Quality management and statistical quality control

This course has also been designed to enable students to achieve the following behavioral learningoutcomes:

Critical thinking and decision making skills
  • Students will strengthen their critical thinking skills by demonstrating their ability to select data and information that is pertinent to a particular problem or opportunity and to use appropriate methods and techniques to analyze the data and information to make well reasoned operations decisions.
  • Students will demonstrate an ability to utilize quantitative and qualitative reasoning and appropriate computer software to solve operations problems.
Group work and verbal communication skills
  • Students will improve group work skills by working on cases and selected problem assignments in teams for on campus and online classes.
  • Students will have the opportunity to improve their verbal communication in regularly scheduled oral presentations of the assigned cases.

Written communication skills
  • Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate written communication skills using responses to short and long essay questions in the mid-term and final exam and in written responses to questions in the case assignments.

If time permits we can discuss and cover other operations management material such as:

  • Aggregate Planning
  • Material Requirement Planning (MRP) and Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP)
  • Short-term Scheduling

Student Responsibilities:

  • To prepare assigned materials prior to class discussion including online assignments, assigned reading, problems, and exercises.
  • To be aware of class schedule changes, key dates, and special instructions (not following instructions may result in a loss of points.) Please check your e-mail or Blackboard announcements regularly.
  • ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED USING BLACKBOARD. ASSIGNMENTS SUBMITTED USING ANY OTHER METHOD MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED. FILE EXCHANGE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Homework: Homework will be assigned regularly online and written assignments. Each homework assignment is worth 20 points. Students are expected to read assigned textbooks and/or other material prior to answer discussion questions.

Students will be expected to do library research in current literature in operations management and Global issues in operations management and related areas.

Case study Submission Format: will be online or underwritten assignments.

Research Paper: Each student will be required.

Examinations:Please be aware that the chapters or problems in some texts [older editions or international editions] do not match with the syllabus, so follow the sessions, presentations and power point presentations for the course.There will be three exams (100 points each). In scope, the exams will cover both assigned reading and lectures. Exams will be objective, including the solution of problems.

The exams will be true/false, multiple choice and problems take home.

Exams are online, and have a 2 hour 30 minute (150 minute) time limit.

Quizzes: In supplement of examinations, there will be three quizzes, 25 points each. Quizzes will be online. Each time you take the quiz 25 questions will appear and you can take the quiz up to2 times. The last score will be recorded, and the quizzes will end before the exams).

Class Participation: Students are expected to participate in course discussions, both in class and online. Class participation is worth 10% of your final grade for the course.

FORMAT OF COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

Homework:

All students are required to complete all On-line Homework assignments that are posted to the Blackboard. All Homework assignments must be completed and submitted via the Blackboard previous to the start of the next class session.

Completion of My Class Participation assignment outlined above before each Exam. MY CLASS PARTICIPATION ASSIGNMENTSMUST BE TURNED IN USING BLACKBOARD UNDER WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS

All Homework and Class Participation Assignments must be completed and turned in 24 hours before each Exam. Online assignments will be removed at these deadlines.

Exams and Quizzes

Each Exam will be comprised of 50 questions, many of which can be found directly on the Quizzes. The remaining questions will cover the same material as found within the Quizzes, although the questions will be different.

Each Quiz will be comprised of 25 questions, pulled randomly from a larger pool. Students may take the Quizzes up to two (2) times.The score for your final attempt of the quiz will your grade recorded for the course.

These are closed-book/closed-note Exams. As there is no proctor, we will rely on the Honor System for you to take these tests as intended. Any student who does not abide by these rules will be held accountable as outlined in the UIS codes of student conduct.

Research Paper

Research Papers are required by group 7-8 pages, not including bibliographies, charts, or other supporting materials. Students are required to cite 5 sources—no more than 3 of which should be online sources. Research should come from published books, journals, empirical studies, or comparably authored and reviewed web sites. Papers will be graded, in part, based on the reliability of their sources.

Case Studies

All students are required to complete all group or individual Cases and Problems that are posted to the Blackboard. All Cases and Problems must be completed and submitted via the Blackboard 24 hours before the Exam. The Cases and Problems will no longer be accessible on the Blackboard site after this deadline.
