Affixes: Suffixes / Word Structure
The word civilization has suffixes such as –ion or -ation. Use a dictionary to confirm the meaning of the adjective civilized.
The suffix –ion or –ation means “a state or condition.” If civilized means “having a high level of social organization,” then civilization must refer to something that is in that state or condition. In this case, it means they took Paul away from any place where people lived.
