2011 BUDOKAN MONSter and Junior Boys/GirlsCompetition

28thAugust 2011

On the 28thAugust 2011, Budokan Judo Club hosted its 10thannual MONSter (formerly U/10s)competition staged since the JFA introduced them in 2002.Last year we included for the first time a club-hosted NSW U/14s age competition which, like the U/10s, also had a provision for novice (yellow belt) divisions.Since then, Juniors have been split again and we now have Junior Boys/Girls (9, 10, or 11 in 2011) and Senior Boys/Girls (12, 13, or 14 in 2011). MONs category has also changed from U/10 years on the day of the competition to 6, 7, or 8 in 2011. So this year we made our competition for the new MONS and Junior Boys/Girls age categories. At the same time we kept the novice grade divisions (Yellow Belt only) within each age category so that it remained a real education for less experienced Judoka introducing the formalities and pressure of a competition in a very friendly environment.

Some statistics from the competition:

  • Participation from 68 athletes covering 14 clubs, compared to 2010 where we had87 athletes from 13 clubs
  • There were 29 MONS and 39 Junior Boys/Girls compared to 2010 where we had 44 MONS and 43 Senior Boys/Girls
  • The above 2 sets of statistics can be explained by the fact that the two new age categories effectively reduced the age range of eligible athletes by 3 years (6 – 11 years in 2011 compared to 6 – 14 years in 2010).
  • A total of 109 matches were played
  • We ran 13MONS divisionswith 57 matches (+ 2 uncontested divisions), compared to 2010 where we ran 15 MONSdivisions
  • We ran 19 Junior Boys/Girls divisions with 52 matches (+ 1 uncontested division), compared to 2010 where we ran 15 Senior Boys/Girls divisions
  • Largest category was MONS Novice Girls with 29 followed by Graded Junior Boys with 21, combining to 74% of the total entries
  • There were no Graded MONS Girls divisions at all, an interesting statistic when compared to the previous one
  • Largest Club entry was Budokan with 18 (26%) entries followed by UNSW with 8
  • We awarded 36 Gold, 34 Silver and 20 Bronze Medals plus7 special awards for Ne-Waza, Tachi-Waza, Spirit and Player of the Day for MONS and 4 similar awards for Under 12s
  • We sold all the food
  • There were only compliments and no complaints
  • There were no hungry or grumpy referees or parents
  • We made a lot of money for the club fundraising account ($1900 minus trophies, with quite a few left over)

A huge congratulations goes out to all to celebrate yet another wonderfully successful Budokan tournament.

The weather was great, the number of competitors was huge, the food was very tasty and plentiful, the Budokan support was again outstanding and we made a huge profit, significantly more than last year.

  • A special thank you to 2 young people who gave up a lot of their time:

  • Jack Beedham (15years old) who spent the entire Sunday setting up, cooking and cleaning up at the BBQ.
  • These 2 people out in a huge effort
  • Thanks also to the 8 referees who officiated led by Rodney Moulder and Young Chull Woo
  • Thanks to Castle Trophies who once again gave us a very good price on the quality trophies

There were some great matches and even quite a few going to golden score and decision, with all athletes putting on a great spectacle of technique and spirit. We received many positive comments from visiting parents and coaches during and after the competition which is very encouraging and motivating.

The 14 clubs represented and numbers participating were: Budokan (11 MONSters compared to 16 last year, and 7 U/12s for a total of 23 participants, compared to 34 in 2010), Uni of NSW (8 compared to 3 last year), Blacktown City 7 (compared to 10 last year), Blacktown PCYC (5 compared to 10last year), Illawarra (5 compared to 3 last year), Woy Woy (3 compared to 1 last year), Zen Bu (3 compared to 4 last year); Bushido (3 compared to 1 last year) Willoughby (3 compared to 2 last year), Kido (2, same as last year). We also had 4 clubs competing this year that didn’t participate last year: Mt Druitt, a new club with 5 entries, Kugatsu with 2, and Samurai and BushidoSthCoast with 1. Thanks to all these clubs for supporting our event.

Included in the 32MONS and Junior divisions contestedwere 8 special combined divisions where weight divisions or male and female athletes were aggregated (or both) to create as many matches as we could generate. Budokan’s 11 MONSters won 5 divisions, came second in 4 divisions and third in 5 divisions as well as winning three of the special awards as voted by the referees and club officials, including Player of the Day.

In the Junior Boys/Girls age category, Budokan’s 7athletes also did well winning 3 divisions, coming second in 5 divisions and third in 2 divisions as well as winning one of the special awards as voted by the referees and club officials, again Player of the day.

Congratulations to all athletes especially those who participated in competition for the first time. This is your first rung up the ladder of your future competition career. Results for this year’s competition follow:

Again, this event was a great success for the club – it showed the real spirit of working together and contributing even where there is no direct involvement of the families with the athletes competing. This is the Budokan spirit.

We have attempted to capture all the roles and names but we’re sure to have missed a few so to everone who helped make this a successful competition, congratulations and

"!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Finally, congratulations on a job well done to all the Budokan MONSters and Junior Boys and Girls who competed, to all clubs who participated, and to all the supporters and helpers of the event.
