Theme: The World Around US
  1. Kids Gone Wild (Part I &II)
/ Part I & II. This is an overview of our natural environment and all that it entails, both biotic and abiotic factors such air, water, soil, plants and animals. It will also look at basic plant and animal classification.
  1. Habitat Detectives (Part I &II)
/ Part I & II. This looks at different types of habitats and ecosystems both terrestrial and aquatic. Such as forests, wetlands, lakes, coral reefs, etc. It will include various outdoor ecological studies and nature walks.
  1. The Birds & the Bees
/ This will look at pollinators, their importance to our environment and in particular food production. This will include an up-close study of pollinators and a tour of our pollinator garden.
  1. Invaders Alert
/ This looks at invasive plants and animals, what makes them "invasive" and why they can be a threat to our environment.
  1. The Story of Life
/ This will look at the history of the Earth and how plants and animals evolve over time and adapt to their environment.
  1. Forest Trails
/ This is a explorative lesson in the different types of forests, the types of plants and animals that may be found in the forest, within each area of the forest: forest floor, canopy, etc.

/ These workshops will entail hands-on basic training with the students in pottery, art, craft, photography & design.
*Offered only at the Buchanan Community Teaching Garden.
Theme: In the Soil
  1. Creepy Crawlies & Composting Fun (Part I &II)
/ Part I & Part II. This looks at the process of composting and the factors that are required: FBI(fungus, bacteria, invertebrates), air, moisture, etc. This includes an up-close investigation of the compost area at the Buchanan gardens.
  1. Wriggle Away Waste (Part I &II)
/ Part I & II. This looks at the process of vermi-composting.
  1. Gardening Do's & Don'ts (Part I &II)
/ Part I & II. This is an outdoor workshop which teaches children about how to develop and grow edible gardens.
  1. It's Alive
/ This takes an investigative look at soil and all the components at soil and what contributes towards making healthy soil.
  1. Soil Critters
/ This takes a closer look at soil organisms and their role and function within soil.
  1. Muggles n' Mudpies
/ This looks at soil composition, soil particle size and how that affects soil quality.
  1. Bug n Worm Tales
/ This is an investigative look into worms and bugs and their importance in the soil ecosystem.

/ This looks at the benefits of eating healthy.
  1. Veggie Adventures (Part I &II)
/ This teaches about vegetables that are locally grown and the different ways that we can use them in our diet.

/ This is an outdoor cooking class and show's how to make simple nutritious dishes using fresh fruits and vegetables.
  1. Eatin' Green (Part I &II)
/ This teaches us how to be more responsible consumers, how to shop for products that are both environmentally responsible and healthy.

/ This looks at how to grow edible plants indoors.

/ This is an outdoor cooking class that allows students to use their creativity to create dishes and cook using a solar oven.

/ This teaches about climate change, causes and effects.

/ This educates and empowers students about how to be environmental ambassadors.

/ This looks at effects of plastic pollution in our environment.

/ This teaches about carbon emissions and how we can reduce our footprint.

/ This is a hands-on outdoor activity where children will get involved in developing and implementing a green initiative.

/ This is an interactive song and storytelling session featuring the puppet Oscar
  1. Waste Busters: Putting Waste in Its Place (Part I &II)
/ This looks the effects of pollutions and also how to reduce and recycle waste.
  1. What Bin Does It Go In? (Part I &II)
/ This looks at the different waste streams: blue, grey & green and how to sort waste correctly.
  1. The Waste Cycle
/ This looks at the life cycle of different products such as plastic waste bottle, an apple, an electronic item, etc
  1. Examining E-Waste
/ This looks at our electronic waste, the effects and how to properly dispose of them.
  1. 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
/ This challenges students to think about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle waste
  1. Trash to Treasure
/ This will challenge students to see waste as a source of materials to create new useful items.
Theme: Green Technology (Part I &II)

/ This teaches about the different types of renewable energy and allows students to investigate the benefits of each.

/ This looks at how to build simple items that can be used in a garden, such as birdhouses
  1. Build-a-Toy (Part I &II)
/ This teaches students how to build eco-friendly toys.

/ This teaches students how to build robots that uses renewable energy.
  1. Green Party
/ This is a outdoor vent for kids, it will include eco-games, building competitions and more.

All workshops will be outdoor, hands-on and highly practical in nature. Workshops will include activities such as:

  • Gardening
  • Composting
  • Science experiments
  • Nature Walks
  • Bird watching
  • Outdoor studies
  • Cooking activities
  • Arts and crafts
  • Designing/building/assembling garden items, toys, simple machines, robots, etc.
  • Environmental care initiatives
  • How to make healthy snacks: apple chips, kale chips, fruit rollups!

AGE GROUPS:

  • Seedlings: Ages 4-7
  • Sprouts: 8-10
  • Saplings: 11-14

Additional information:

  • Workshops will be available Monday- Friday from July 3rd to August 25th.
  • Two workshops and/or activities will be offered daily for ALL age groups: seedlings, sprouts and saplings. Each workshop will last approximately 2 hours.
  • Morning session: 10:00 am- 12:00 am afternoon session: 1:00pm-3:00 pm
  • Workshops will be offered at a cost of $2 per child per workshop.
  • Discounts are available for: groups of 20 students or more, students who wants to register for 4 weeks or more.
