BTEC Introduction Level 1 in Vocational Studies – Key Stage 4

2. Site visit. Trip to see the city of culture Victorian architecture in Liverpool. Anglican cathedral, St. George’s Hall. Use of colours in brickwork.
3. Brickworks trip up Holland. Look at different types of bricks and their use in building.
Engineering bricks, house bricks and special bricks.
4. Observe a simple wall being built. Take notes. Photographs. Open ended question and answer session.
5. Hazard awareness and problem solving.
Videos and photographs of construction sites. Risks to builders on site.
Safety clothing. First aid in emergency situations or hazard issues.
6. Research tools and Equipment: Establish the basic tool kit that a bricklayer uses to build a simple wall. / 7. Try out the correct tools. Spreading mortar in the correct way, cutting surplus mortar off bricks in the correct way, levelling single bricks both ways. Using a string and pins or blocks, ranging and plumbing activity.
Build a three brick structure that is level, gauged and plumb.
*. Find out the cost of individual bricklaying tools; trowel, level, pins and line, brick hammer, lump hammer, long chisel, short chisel, boating level, pointing trowel.
8. Site visit to see how quickly bricklayers work.
9. Build a roman arch using a wooden centre.
10. Build over arch and point all brickwork before removing the centre.

Children to learn to use the spirit level across wider distances.
Using a straight string line and a three foot level, pupils will be able to transfer a level to begin a wall.
2. How to use building line and pins.
Pupils will learn how to tie and fix a building line to a variety of courses and walls using both pin and block methods.
3. How to butter and spread mortar.
Pupils to practice buttering bricks for a variety of uses such as, brick on edge, soldier courses, and queen closures.
4. How to cut bricks
Pupils to learn how to use bolster chisels, lump and brick hammers.
5. Pointing.
Pupils will learn about the reasons and the techniques of pointing, using both pointing trowels and jointers.
6. Gauging
Pupils will learn to gauge the brickwork to the correct measurements and learn about the importance of accuracy. / Plumbing
1. Pupils will learn how to plumb the wall at the correct points for accuracy and neatness, using the spirt level.
2. Setting out a wall.
Pupils will learn to set out a planned wall accurately. They will be able to work out the materials needed for the project and estimate the time required to complete the work.
3. Practice
Pupils will be able to practice the wall that they plan to build for their assessment work.
Build a wall to the criteria set out in the BTEC course.
Check for accuracy and discuss how this can be improved upon for the test.
4. Build an arch.
Pupils will learn the techniques of building a Roman arch using a centre. Discuss the reasons for archways in brickwork and the history of different styles of arch.
5. Build a pier with eight plumbing points on. Plumbing practice.
6. Ranging in.
Pupils will learn and practice ranging in the brickwork for accuracy and neatness.
7. Take the assessment test.
