Media Center Handbook

2016 – 2017

Hours

The Media Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:15 am until 3:45 pm when school is in session. The media center operates on a flexible schedule that allows students to use the media center, with teacher permission, throughout the day.

Media Center Use

Teachers who wish to send small groups of students to the media center for research should notify the media specialist in advance. This enables the media specialist to be prepared to help students accomplish the teacher’s purpose and to have materials assembled if needed.

Teachers who want to bring classes to the media center for research, book check-out and/or use chromebooks should complete the online “Schedule the Redskin Hub” form located on the media center web page at least a week in advance. There is also a calendar on the media center page to check availabiltity.

Media Committee

The school media committee is composed of the principal, media specialist, and one faculty member from each content area. The committee meets two or three times each school year. Its purpose is to identify school needs and set priorities for the purchase of media materials and equipment based on short-range and long-range goals.

Circulation Policy

A library card is required to check out books. Every new student is given a library card. If a student loses a library card, a replacement card must be purchased for $1.00. Students are responsible for the care and return of books that they check out.

Books are checked out for a two week period. Books may be returned or renewed at any time prior to the due date. Books that are not returned or renewed by the end of two weeks become overdue. A fine accumulates for each school day that the book is late.

Students may not check out another book until an overdue book is returned and the fine is paid.

Teachers may check out as many items as are needed for an unspecified amount of time. This includes reference materials.

Newspapers, magazines and reference books may not be checked out by students.

Overdue books/Materials

A fine of $0.05 per school day will be charged for overdue books and materials.

Overdue and fine notices are printed on advisement days. They are put in the advisement teacher’s mailbox to be distributed during advisement.

Fines and overdue materials need to be resolved as soon as possible.

Lost/Damaged Materials

When books are lost or damaged beyond repair, the purchase price of the book is charged. If the lost book is found, the price paid for the book will be refunded less the daily fine amount.

Media Center Passes

Students who come to the media center during the school day must bring a media center pass from the teacher. Media center passes are issued to teachers at the beginning of the school year. Upon entering the media center, the student must present the pass at the circulation desk. Students will sign in on the chromebookwhen they arrive and leave.

Students without a pass will be sent back to the classroom for a pass.

Professional Library

The media center has a collection of professional materials. These materials are located in the production room in the media center. The materials may be accessed from the card catalog.

Procedures for Selecting and Maintaining the Library Media Collection

The school library media specialist, in conjunction with the principal, is responsible for the selection of materials in the collection. Teachers are encouraged to request that specific materials be purchased for the collection. All requests will be kept in a consideration file and purchased when approved and funds are available.

In selecting materials for purchase, the media specialist evaluates the existing collection and consults reputable, professional selection aids (e.g. journals), the media committee and faculty and students.

Materials considered for purchase are judged by the following criteria:

  • Purpose – Overall purpose to the collection and the relationship to instructional objectives and/or the curriculum.
  • Treatment – Clear, comprehensive, well-organized, and durable
  • Authority – Valid, reliable, up-to-date and objective
  • Scope – Purpose and coverage
  • Special features – Useful illustrations, photographs, maps, charts, graphs
  • Format – Book, DVD, video
  • Cost
  • Series – Is it a part of a series?

The media specialist will:

  • Accept gift items. Gift items are judged by standard selection criteria. If they meet the criteria, the items are incorporated into the collection.
  • Purchase duplicates of extensively used materials
  • Weed (i.e. remove) worn, damaged and obsolete items from the collection.
  • Purchase replacements for worn, damaged, or missing materials that are integral to the collection.
  • Select books in order to maintain a balanced collection.
  • Select magazines based on their contribution as a source of current information.
  • Select software, DVDs and videos to complement the print collection as well as to offer an adequate amount of materials, particularly those of special interest.

Inventory

An inventory of materials is conducted during the last two weeks of the school year to identify missing materials and deficiencies in the collection.

All library materials are due from students two weeks before the last day of school for students.

Teachers are provided a list of materials checked out to them. Teachers are encouraged to return materials as soon as possible before the last day of school. Materials checked out to teachers are inventoried by the last day of post planning.

Any student who does not return books by the time that report cards are printed will not receive a report card until the book is returned or paid for if lost.

Students and staff may continue to visit the media center following the last book due date.

Weeding

Weeding is the systematic removal of worn, damaged and obsolete items from the collection. This process allows assessment of the collection and ensures that the collection is current and relevant to curricula and to users.

Assessment criteria:

  • Poor physical shape (torn, binding falling apart)
  • Poor format (small print, poor quality of print/pictures)
  • Poor content (out-of-date, inaccurate information)
  • Inappropriate for the collection (inappropriate reading level/content for the users)

Exempt items:

  • The classics
  • Local interest
  • Georgia history
  • Items published by the school
