RUSSELL SYKES - VEREDON WHIPPETS – UK

My first job at 15 years old was at a Greyhound racing track in Sheffield, UK. I quickly fell in love with the Greyhounds and had a great affinity with them. I begged my parents for one! I was told ''they are far too big - but if you do well in your exams you can a little Whippet!''

I settled for that and soon after completely by accident, I was pointed in the direction of Phil Moran-Healy of the famous Hillsdown affix. I bought two bitches from Phil's litter - Hillsdown Adorable & Hillsdown Undeniable. As it turned out, My father knew Phil from years previous, and Phil was to become my mentor in dogs. I attended several shows with Phil, and soon was completely smitten by the show bug.

My Own Veredon affix was registered in 2002. The first Veredon litter was born in May 2003. I have served on the committee of the South Yorkshire Whippet Club since 2003 - we organise two shows per year - an open show in February and a Championship Show in October. We also hold Whippet seminars for aspiring judges of the breed.

I first judged the breed at Open show level in 2004, and have attended numerous seminars held by different breed clubs in the UK.

I have passed all my relevant UK Kennel Club requirements to be approved to award CC's in the UK, these include: requirements of a dog show judge assessment, Points of a dog assessment, Conformation and movement assessment, 'Hands on' assessment hosted by North Eastern Whippet Society and Fulfilled 'Geographical spread' of areas judged in the UK.

I also judged the required number of dogs & classes to enable me to award CC's in the UK and I have good experience of stewarding at both Open & Championship Shows.

I have Judged breed Club Open Shows for The South West Whippet Club in 2012 with over 120 Whippets entered, and my second breed Club open show was for the Northern Counties Whippet Club in 2011, with around 100 Whippets entered. I have also judged in Germany for the Whippet Club of Deutschland in 2012, where I judged the puppies and veterans.

I first judged at Championship show level in January 2015 for Boston & District Canine Society, where I judged an entry of 150 Whippets.

I judged The Whippet Club of Scotland Championship Show in June 2016 - where I judged an entry of 130 Whippets and I have a further Judging appointment for South Wales Kennel Association Championship show in 2018.

I am very much a breed specialist, and have no interest in judging other breeds. So far, I have bred or owned 3 Champion Whippets -Ch. Veredon VIP Swe. Nor. Lat. Dan & Fin. Ch Veredon Vanilla Ranger at Windwalker (Top winning Whippet Male Norway 2010 Ned. Dan. Int. Ch Lanakeshena Love In Motion at Veredon (Reserve Dog CC Crufts 2011, Top winning Whippet male, Netherlands 2014)

There have been several other CC, RCC winners bred or owned by myself.

My proudest moment in the breed was doing the 'Double' at Northern Ireland Whippet Club Championship Show 2012, where I took the Dog CC with Ch Courthill Catcher In The Rye, and the Bitch CC with Cedarridge Vanilla Skies over Veredon.

Both Dog & Bitch RCC winners at Crufts 2011 were Sired by my own Dog, Falconcrag Valente at Veredon, a very proud day.

I am looking forward to this appointment!

Kind regards from Yorkshire UK,

Russell Sykes,

IVA KIMMELMAN – MERCI ISLE WHIPPETS – USA

Pictured: ‘NSBOS Ch Tangens The Maverick Cosmonaut Fch, CRX’ after a field trial

Merci Isle Whippets began in 1967 when I was just 18 years old. I raced my dogs before I ever exhibited in the ring in the early 1970’s. I then discovered open field coursing and later lure coursing. I have been long identified as a Whippet fancier who promotes the traditional dual purpose enjoyment of our breed, and I still breed for healthy, handsome, well-mannered dogs with keen prey drive. I have tried hard, and often succeeded, to produce dual titled Whippets with every litter. If a Whippet can’t run like a Whippet should, it is not really a good representative of its breed.

We have had much success in the show ring and am responsible for 118 show champions to date including breeding National Specialty Best in Show Winners and have been fortunate enough to include some wonderful international bloodlines into our kennel. In 2004, we were lucky enough to have Australian dog SBIS Aust & Am Ch Byerley Saville Row come to our kennel on lease for a year and a half. During his stay in the U.S he qualified for his ROMX title as a top producer. We are eternally grateful to Peter More and Peter Griffiths for sending ‘Sav’ to us. The real game changers for our kennel were definitely Savile Row and NSBOS Ch Tangens The Maverick Cosmonaut Fch, CRX. If not for those two dogs, very prepotent in many areas, I wouldn’t have the fantastic dogs I have had for the past ten years.

I have judged whippets all over the world and even did some classes at your first National in Melbourne 2004. In 2003 I judged the largest whippet entry ever in the USA at our American WhippetClub National specialty which was a real thrill for me.

I am very much looking forward this appointment.

Kind Regards,

Iva Kimmelman
