SPRING 2015

Head Coach Phillip Powell – Hurdles, Vertical Jumps, Long Sprints and Distance

Assistant Coaches:

Yvonne Teasley – Short Sprints and Horizontal Jumps

Clint Tanner - Throws

Welcome to Franklin County Track And Field. As the head coach of our track program, it is with great pride and excitement that I extend to you the opportunity to participate in our Track and Field program. By indicating to me that you intend to participate in Track and Field, I feel that you, the athlete, should be made aware of the rules and regulations that we feel are necessary to adhere to during the season. These rules are both the rules set forth by the Georgia High School Association and those supported by the Franklin County Athletic Department. This contract is to let you know what is expected of you both in and out of the classroom and what consequences will be given if you choose to break or ignore these guidelines. Participation is a privilege, certain rules must be met and will go into effect immediately and will remain in effect until this time next year.

GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS

1)Pass 3 out of 4 classes from the fall semester.

2)Be on track to graduate with your class. (Doesn’t apply to 9th graders.)

3)Pass a physical examination and have the results on file with the school.

4)Be covered by adequate medical insurance.

5)Be of eligible age.

6)Physicals: You must have a physical on file with the school by the start date of track and field. Physicals are good for one year. The start date for track and field is January 20th.

7)Practice: My expectation for practice is for you to be on the track at 3:50 every day ready to warm up for the day’s workout. Dress appropriately. We will practice everyday Monday through Friday. If you are going to miss practice you need to let a coach know ahead of time.

8)Track and Field is a tough sport and soreness is expected. Remember you will only perform as hard as you train. Training hard leads to success. If you are not committed to training hard you will not be successful and will let down your teammates. Gird your loins and prepare early. Start running a few days a week now to get your body ready to perform at its peak.

These policies may be individually amended due to illness, injury, or special circumstances, but will otherwise be strictly followed. We will notify parents if any major punitive action is pending. Athletes trying out or involved in other Franklin County sports will be expected to attend track practice unless tryouts for the sports activity is actually in progress. If you are getting help from a teacher, you will need a note from the teacher. You will also be expected to come down to practice beforehand and stay until released. All team members are also expected to attend all meets even if they are not competing. The schedule shows you what days need to be set aside for track meets also. We compete on several weekends so it is important that you make plans now to be able to compete or attend those meets.

No Cuts in Track:

Everyone who signs up is on the team as long as they come to practice and abide by the team rules. Varsity meet participants and JV meet participants will be determined by Coaches based on practice, training effort and timed trials or later, by meet time rankings.

Expenses for track:

There are no expenses for track and field. Uniforms will be provided. You will be responsible for your own spikes this year. If you would like to purchase any of our pair from last year they are $20 a pair. The best website for spikes is eastbay. If you do not know what to order, please ask. Warmups, socks, bags, and t-shirts can be purchased on our teamstore through Eastbay at the following web address:

EXPECTATION CONTRACT

The items contained in the following contract are the expectations of team members.

  1. Attend all practices: unless excused by the coaches for illness or doctors appointments.
  2. Be on time: know when you are to be at practice and meets. Make sure you are at meets when you have been instructed to be there. It is important that you get there when your event coaches expect you there to warm up properly and to insure that the team is not waiting on you. Many of the meets require athletes to arrive at different times, know when you are to arrive and get there early to be safe.
  3. Respect your team mates and their belongings: Always be supportive and they will always support you.
  4. Respect your coaches: with regards to training and behavior.
  5. Report all potential injuries: as soon as possible to coaches before seeing the trainer.
  6. Take care of track and track and field equipment: help us all prolong the life of our track and track and field equipment.
  7. Learn track and field courtesy: know how to avoid getting in other athletes ways, we have a very large track program and we have to learn how to share the track.
  8. Practice safety measures at all times: track and field can be dangerous if safety is not practiced at all times, do not play around the pits, or the throwing areas, know where and when you must be most careful.
  9. Be realistic about where your track and field talent may lie: Coaches will allow you to train in the event of your choice in the beginning, but your ability level and the team’s needs will determine where you end up training and competing during the season.
