About Brook

Brook helps young people to make informed, active choices about their personal and sexual relationships so they can enjoy their sexuality without harm.

Brook services provide free and confidential sexual health information, contraception, pregnancy testing, advice and counselling, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and outreach and education work, reaching over 290,000 young people every year.

Until 2011 Brook operated as a network of independent charities but we have now merged into a group of 17 subsidiary charities under a parent company. There are 13 centres in England and one each in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Jersey. We employ over 600 staff across the UK.

  • Clinical and support services– including provision of contraception, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and counseling.

Education For Choice

Education For Choice (EFC) is a project of Brook and supports young people’s right to informed choice on abortion by: delivering workshops for young people; providing evidence-based information and resources; and training health and education professionals.

EFC calls for all young people to get accurate information and good quality education about abortion, and impartial support with pregnancy decision-making whoever they are, whoever they ask and wherever they go. Find out more at:

Campaigns

Brook campaigns for sex and relationships education (SRE) to be fit for the 21st century through our Sex:Positive campaign. We know that young people want SRE that is relevant to their lives, focuses on relationships as well as sex, is honest about human sexuality and taught by professionals who are well prepared and confident. In partnership with FPA we also run the XES – We Can’t Go backwards campaign, launched in response to reports of restrictions to contraception and sexual health services across the UK.Brook and FPA are calling on people in the UK to join the campaign and rate and share their experiences of contraception and sexual health services, good and bad, through the interactive online sexual health map. Brook training, education and outreach services

Brook delivers high quality, affordable training for allprofessionals working with young people.Our expertise is developed from almost 50 years ofexperience working with young people and all ourtraining is informed by their views and perspectives.

Key accountabilities

To be responsible for informing and advising individuals and couples on all aspects of contraception and safe sex and for promoting good sexual and reproductive health

Responsibilities

  • To inform, advise and teach individuals or couples on sexual and reproductive health issues, including all choices of contraception, and assisting those with pre- and post- termination and other health concerns.
  • To provide information to enable clients to make informed choices about their health and lifestyle.
  • To initiate, facilitate or participate in appropriate health enhancing-activities including:
  • Cytology
  • STI Screening and treatment
  • Breast awareness
  • Men’s health issues
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Fertility awareness and pre-conceptual care
  • Safe sex advice
  • General health issues
  • Referral to other agencies for appropriate treatment, with client consent.
  • To plan and deliver evidence-based care and treatment with guidance and supervision from other health professionals.
  • To take initial case histories and to keep accurate, up-to-date medical histories.
  • To work with other members of the team to produce and maintain health care environments that are conducive to safe, therapeutic and ethical practice; to develop and implement effective infection control measures (e.g. cleaning nurses’ station and couches and sterilising instruments).
  • To work according to the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines.
  • To answer telephone queries on clinical matters.
  • To be aware of and act in accordance with Brook policy and procedures.
  • To follow agreed Patient Group Directives, acting at all times within professional competency and in accordance with Brook policies and procedures.
  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, referring to other team members as appropriate.
  • To contribute to development of the Centre’s services in conjunction with the team.
  • To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness – including national and local quality issues - in accordance with PREP requirements and to refer to other health professionals when this will improve health outcomes or when risks and needs are beyond own competence and scope of practice. To attend regular clinical supervision sessions
  • To assist in the training of other staff when required, and to offer advice and support to colleagues.
  • To attend training and support sessions related to nurse administering and to undertake other relevant training as requested.
  • To contribute to the setting and monitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards.
  • To be aware of the role of the nurse in handling complaints in accordance with Brook policy.
  • To develop computer literacy, effective prioritisation, problem solving and delegation skills as necessary for the effective performance of the job.
  • To attend staff and other relevant meetings.

Person specification

The successful applicant will have the following experience;

Essential

  • Supports the aims and work of Brook Centres
  • Maintains strict confidentiality concerning all Brook matters
  • RGN/SRN
  • Recognised contraception/sexual health qualification
  • Theoretical understanding and significant proven ability to practice in family planning, either through a relevant qualification or extensive experience
  • Evidence of recent updating in contraceptive service provision including as a ‘first issuer’ and implant fitter
  • Experience of working in a contraception and or / sexual health clinic
  • Experience of working with young people or demonstrable understanding of your peoples’ sexual health issues
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a sensitive, confidential and non-judgemental manner with young people from a diverse range of backgrounds
  • Commitment to meeting the sexual health needs of all young people
  • Understanding of equality and diversity principles
  • Understanding of health needs of young people
  • Understanding of health promotion strategies
