Broadcasting Deviance:
Technology, Privacy, Celebrity Authenticity in “Public Behaviors”
SOCI 380: Deviance in Society
Fall 2007
Worth 10% of your semester grade
Due in-class on Thursday, Dec. 6th
In the 21st century, the internet has changed the way that deviance (and its associated impact on individual identity) is understood and experienced. One view of this development is that technology has had significant influences in the ways in which deviance is revealed/concealed.
At the same time, technology and media have driven society closer and closer toward a celebrity culture in which notoriety may be easily mistaken for authority and prestige (see for example, Arnold Schwarzenegger).
The purpose of this assignment is for you to explore this facet of contemporary American popular culture by locating five examples of deviant behavior by an “actual” person represented in a YouTube video clip. Here, you may take a very broad view of what constitutes deviance/deviants.
For each of the five videos, you will need to include:
- Your own descriptive title of the deviance/deviant(s)
- The URL address where the video may be viewed by your inquiring professor
- An analysis of each video clip consisting of one paragraph in which you apply any aspect of a relevant concept or observation we have covered class this semester to the video = 5 paragraphs
