British Values
The DFE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutualrespect and tolerance of those different faiths and beliefs are already implicitly embedded in the 2017 Early Years Foundation Stage.”
In the setting our planning and resources enables children to be independent learners, to make choices and to build strong relationships with their peers and all adults. Our setting believes that children develop best when their personal, social and emotional needs are met and where there are clear and developmentally appropriate expectations for their behaviour.
Democracy:
We encourage all children and adults to voice their views and value what people say. We encourage children to talk about their feelings and other children’s feelings and share their views on how they might want to play in a themed area or how best to build something. Staff supports children in their decisions they make and will provide activities that involve turn-taking and sharing.
Rule of Law:
Children in the setting are aware of our golden rules and the reasons why we have the golden rules at pre-school, they are aware of the consequences if the rules are broken. On our ‘Behaviour management Policy’ we recognise that codes for interacting with other people vary between cultures and require staff to be aware of - and respect - those used by members of the setting. We require all staff, volunteers and students to provide a positive model of behaviour by treating children, parents and one another with friendliness, care and courtesy.
Individual Liberty:
At Portreath pre-school we encourage children to develop a positive sense of themselves and we give the children opportunities through their play and learning to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and increase confidence in their own abilities. We always give children the chance to talk about their achievements to the other children and encourage parents to write on our WOW moments sheets.
Mutual Respect:
At Portreath Pre-school we value all the children and their families. We celebrate special occasions that are important to individuals and the world in which we live in. Such as St. Piran’s Day, Divali, Christmas, Bonfire Night, Children in Need and many other celebrations throughout the year. From learning about these celebrations children learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others. Children are given the chance to dress up in different clothes, try different foods from other cultures. Through our ‘golden rules’ we encourage children to listen to adults and each other, share our toys and also care for each other and our environment.
We are committed to reviewing our policy, procedures and good practice.
