Brief Guidance on Referencing

Many have indicated that the OU Law undergraduate guide on referencing is "too much".

To simplify we need to turn to the guidance for TMA03.It says to rely on Unit 11,12,13 and 14

It advises us to rely on Unit 11 for the essay question on tribunals

This is Question 1 so this is the first question.

Unit 11 is therefore represented as OU 2016 a.

To show the reader what part of Unit 11 you are referring to, please insert S2,S3, S6, or whichever section it is you seek to rely on.

This shows the reader that you are referencing Unit 11, Section, 2 and so forth.

Q2 asks us to rely on Unit 14, for content. To reference Unit 14, it is denoted by the suffix b. For example OU 2016b S4 and S5 indicate to the reader that you are relying on Unit 14 and in particular the reader knows if referencing is accurate that content can be found in S4 and S5.

Q3 does not require referencing

The template for the end of text referencing can be adjusted from TMA02

International instruments

European Convention on Human Rights 1950

Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union

Therefore instead of Unit 8, insert Unit 11, and title, and specify its source as online, if need help with this I am around today.

Instead of International instruments, you will have statute law. There is a different heading for case law

Statute Law

Tribunals, Court and Enforcement Act 2007, c15

Case Law

Pickering V Liverpool Daily Post and ECHO Newspapers plc [1991] 2 AC 370

The good news is that case law is referenced the same way in text as it is at the end of text!

Only one adjustment is required for state law, in text it ends at 2007, in other words, no need to insert c15, which denotes that this Act was the 15theenth Act to be issues in 2007

Next steps

What if I want to reference Units 11 and 12

The response is simple, Unit 11 is represented as a, so this will be OU 2016 a. Unit 12 will be represented as b, OU 2016 b.

This has a knock on effect for Q2, so therefore Unit 14 is represented as OU 2016 c

The conclusion here is that each Unit is ALWAYS denoted with the same letter. The next unit you refer to will always be represented by b.

Tried to keep this simple.
