John Burnett was sailing alone across the South China Sea one night in 1992, when his boat was attacked
by pirates. He could have been hurt or even killed, but luckily he survived. Later, he wrote a book about his frightening experience.
II / Burnett was shocked to discover that piracy still exists. In fact, the number of pirate attacks on large ships,
yachts and small boats increases every year. He learned that modern pirates are violent criminals who steal what they can from ships and threaten the lives of the crew and passengers. Piracy is also a serious economic problem, which costs shipping companies billions of dollars.
III / Many pirates sail in international waters in the Far East and off the east coast of Africa. Some pirates are only interested in robbing the crew. However, other pirates are connected to international crime organisations and they want the ship itself. When they take over a ship, they put the crew in lifeboats in the water and then sail away with the ship. Later, the ship is repainted and given a new name. Then it’s used for illegal activities, such as transporting drugs.
IV / Until now, worldwide efforts to stop piracy haven’t been successful. This is mainly because well-known pirate areas are very large and difficult to control. Therefore, the best way to fight modern-day piracy is prevention. Firstly, ships’ captains must know to avoid areas with pirate activity. Secondly, if they can’t avoid these areas, they should sail through them at full speed and have plenty of security on board. If pirates do take over a ship, the captain should give them whatever they want in order to save the crew and passengers.
V / We may think that pirates are handsome and lovable like the pirate Jack Sparrow from the popular Pirates of the Caribbean films. But in reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Today’s pirates are violent and dangerous and must be taken very seriously.
