Job title:School Nurse

Responsible to:Head of Boarding & Care

Objectives of the Job

To provide an efficient and professional medical service to pupils, parents and the school’s teaching and support staff.

The Medical care operation consists of a team of nurses. Nurses are required to liaise with other disciplines such as Matrons; Laundry and House Staff in order to achieve the above objectives and ensure a complete support service to the pupils.

Responsibilities

Main Duties

Health Care in relation to boarders

  • To provide a full health care service for the boarders
  • To hold regular daytime surgeries, normally before the school day, after lunch and in the evening.
  • To provide complete nursing care, organising, running and supervising the Medical Centre, including coping with epidemics when necessary.
  • To provide a health screening service – sight, height, weight and urinalysis.
  • To prepare for and assist at all medical examinations, and ensure that the Doctor’s recommendations are carried out.
  • To carry out an ongoing immunisation programme under Doctor’s guidance.
  • To organise immunisation and vaccination required for pupils travelling abroad.
  • To liaise with parents, obtaining consent to treatment when necessary, informing them of serious accidents or illnesses and of visits to consultants.
  • To be responsible for the arrangements for external medical and emergency dental appointments, including liaison with local hospitals, dental services, community health services etc.
  • Immediate advice to the Head of Boarding & Care of all major cases of sickness and/or injury.
  • Daily advice to the academic office, by 9.00am of pupils ‘bedded down’ and any external medical and dental appointments.
  • Routine and frequent discussion and advice with the House Staff concerning their pupils.
  • To ensure that pupils on Regular Medication receive it at the appropriate times

In relation to day pupils

  • To provide emergency first-aid treatment and paternal care if illness arises during the school day.
  • To liaise with parents and form tutors as necessary.

In relation to Staff

  • To provide a general advisory and emergency health care service for the teaching and ancillary staff.
  • To provide an occupational health service and monitor the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

General

  • To be present in the Medical Centre while on duty to deal with emergencies, to see visitors etc.
  • The recording, safe custody and storage of drugs.
  • To maintenance of Accident Report forms and the School’s Accident Book for Staff and pupils.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance of the daily treatment book.
  • Regular inspection and maintenance of First Aid Boxes.
  • To be responsible for the organization of transport of patients to hospital/Doctor’s surgery as necessary.
  • Notification to the General Manager of all notifiable accidents as required by the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • To assist with basic first Aid lectures and assess pupils as advised by relevant tutor.

Working Practices

Routine

  • Duty rotas will be as arranged with the Head of Boarding & Care.
  • Handover/takeovers, are to include a full verbal briefing of all relevant events and occurrences since the oncoming Nurse was previously on duty and are to include any ‘follow-up’ action as required. It is the responsibility of the nurse going off duty to ensure that her relief is completely briefed.
  • Daily Surgeries will be held each morning; lunchtime and evening.
  • Absence from the Medical Centre should be avoided during surgery times, but if this is not possible arrangements are to be made for appropriate staff to deputise.

Appointments

  • Medical appointments often require the pupil to be accompanied depending on their age, sense of responsibility, communication skills and type of appointment. Medical escorts can be provided for these, nurse to arrange.
  • Parents should be advised/encouraged to arrange routine dental and optician’s appointments during the school holidays.

Telephone

  • Responsibility for the answering of incoming emergency calls, outside office hours is that of the duty nurse.
  • The telephones are provided for medical and emergency purposes and are not for the general use of staff and pupils.

Premises

  • The Medical Centre is a restricted area and access is by the Nurses’ permission only. The access door is to remain closed to provide privacy and segregation and entry is to be allowed only to those with a good and sufficient reason.

Relationship

  • The nursing staff are expected to maintain a professional working relationship, one with the other. Such are the establishment and working procedures that it is incumbent upon members of staff to discuss and mutually agree any relevant matters as are required to provide an efficient and proper medical service.
