About Breast Cancer Haven

History

In 1996 Sara Davenport sold her art gallery in order to start Breast Cancer Haven. She was inspired to do this when her friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and she could see the need to create somewhere like Breast Cancer Haven to help support her recovery. Sara bought a building in Fulham. London and began raising funds to turn it into the first Breast Cancer Haven support centre. It was opened in February 2000 by our Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales.

In January 2004 he opened the second Breast Cancer Haven in Hereford. The third Haven opened in Leeds in October 2008. Our Wessex Haven opened in October 2015 followed by Breast Cancer Haven Worcestershire Hospital NHS Trust in early 2016.

In October 2017 the charity will open its sixth centre, Breast Cancer Haven, West Midlands, based in Solihull.

Why is there a need for Breast Cancer Haven?

·  1 in 8 women develops breast cancer in the UK

·  1% of all UK breast cancer diagnosis (350 per annum) is in men

·  Over 48,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year

·  As people live longer following diagnosis, increasing numbers of people develop consequences of the cancer and its treatment. Hospital-based services are not best placed to deliver these and cannot meet the demands of this growing population

What is a Breast Cancer Haven?

Our centres offer free support, information and complementary therapies to anyone affected by breast cancer. We provide a comforting environment where Visitors can benefit from the support of our welcoming team and from meeting others going through similar experiences.

“Having breast cancer made me want to improve every aspect of my life, to give myself the best chance. But I needed information and advice on what would help me most, physically and emotionally. I found this at Breast Cancer Haven”. Clare

Plans for the future
Breast Cancer Haven has enjoyed considerable success in a short period of time. It is a forward thinking charity and has ambitious plans to open more centres across the country over the coming years, including its sixth centre in the West Midlands next year. Its fundraising and marketing strategy must secure the charity through the current economic climate and also keep pace with planned expansion.

Breast Cancer Haven, West Midlands

With around 2,500 breast cancer patients diagnosed each year within a 35-mile radius of Solihull, we have received overwhelming endorsement from healthcare professionals in the Heart of England Trust for the creation of a new Breast Cancer Haven in this area.

Following a generous gift of £2.5m from the previous government we have been able to purchase our new centre in Solihull and are currently refurbishing the building which will open to the public in October 2017. However, this is just the start. We now need to raise £600,000 annually to ensure that Breast Cancer Haven, West Midlands can deliver and sustain its services.
