John Piper S Don T Waste Your Life Lesson 5 & 6

John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life Lesson 5 & 6

King William Smith the 3rd & Squire Amaris Rimay

Memory Verses:

John 15:20 “20Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.'[a] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.”

Ephesians 6:16“16In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

Homework Questions:

1) Is gladly making others glad in God” identical to loving others? If that is to be our goal in life, how does it relate to other goals in life that we have discussed in previous lessons like “Boast only in the cross” and “Pursue the glory of God”?

2) John Piper defines a risk as “an actions that exposes you to the possibility of loss or injury” (page 79). He also notes that the reason risk exists is “because there is such a thing as ignorance” (page 80). In light of this definition, is it possible for God to take risks? Has God ever taken a risk? Use Scripture to support your answer.

3) What is the biggest problem with TV? List three ways that television and the Internet negatively affect you and your family. If someone compared the amount of time you spent watching television and surfing the Internet with the amount of combined time you spent praying, reading the Bible, and worshiping God, what might they conclude about the source of your satisfaction?

4) In this chapter John Piper confronts our modern obsession with trivial things. Make a list of at least six items to which people devote significant amounts of time and money. Then circle the ones to which you personally devote too much time or money. In light of this chapter, what action, if any, are you planning to take with respect to these passions?
