COURSE OBJECTIVESBy the end of this semester most students will be able to function at different ranges of the intermediate level of the language proficiency (intermediate low, mid and high) and some will show proficiency in the advanced low range. The course will follow a series of thematic units which will help you to improve your language skills (speaking, writing, reading, listening) while deepening your understanding of Italian culture.

COURSE OUTCOMES At the end of this semester most students will be able to:

1)Participate in simple, direct conversation on generally predictable topics related to the self , the surroundings and general info about Italian culture,

2)Obtain information by asking and answering questions,

3)Initiate, sustain and bring to closure a number of uncomplicated exchanges,

4)Create with language both in speaking and writing by combining language elements string of sentences with new thematic vocabulary and recycled ones,

5)Satisfy simple personal needs, social demands,

6)Learn about a number of cultural topics of Contemporary Italy,

7)Get familiar with literary topics and texts.

ITAL 30 is an EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING COURSEThe course is designated as an Experiential Learning course. Students will attain language proficiency at different ranges of the intermediate level by practicing all language skills (writing, speaking, reading, listening and grammar) through the study of five thematic units on current Italian culture. They will actively engage in a great number of group activities experiencing a sense of agency when communicating with their peers and the instructor. They will be able to improve their skills by interacting, practicing and reporting daily on cultural readings, film and videos’ content related to specific themes. Students will learn thematic vocabulary and relevant grammar connected with each specific unit to express simple ideas about their life experience in relation to their immediate surroundings. They will be able to engage in simple conversations regarding their life and daily routine, they will compare the Italian family experiences to their own, they will reflect on the current challenges in finding work in Italy and USA and about the relevant social and political implications of current immigration in Italy, making connections to their own experience as global citizens. Class activities are designed to stimulate students’ interest in such topics and to consistently engage them in presentations, spontaneous language production and creative dialogues to reach a sense of belonging in an active community of learners. Textual analysis of different interdisciplinary material will be a strong component of the course to understand cultural differences and diversity within the Italian culture and the world. Students will be asked to take charge in leading activities to create comprehension questions and/or short reports to advance their overall language production and leadership skills.

Think carefully about your placement in this course: Will this course be challenging for you? Do you want to major or minor in Italian Studies and will you have enough time to do so? If you think you might not be in the right course, please speak with your professor immediately.

Keep in mind that once you have completed a course in the language sequence-courses numbered 10-106; you will not be able to skip a level.

If the course that is at your level is closed, we advise you to wait a semester and enroll in the right course.

REQUIREMENTS

• Success in this 4 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will spend a minimum of 9 hours of study time per week in preparation for class (written and oral homework preparation, readings, compositions, discussion sections, preparation for exams, videos, movies, co-curricular activities, Italian Table etc.).

• Attendance and participation in classLearning to speak another language demands in-class participation. Your attendance and your participation are part of your final grade. Therefore, more than three unjustified absences will influence your grade, specifically a grade of A will turned into an A-, an A- into a B+ and so on.

• The study of the grammar, vocabulary, and reading and written exercises as listed on the syllabusmust be completedbeforecoming to class. Classroom time is devoted to practice and questions regarding the subject of the day.LATE HOMEWORK WILL RECEIVE A LOWER GRADE.

Compositions: During the semester you will be asked to write short compositions on different topics and on Italian films. These should be 350 words minimum, typed, double-spaced.Written assignments should be turned in on scheduled due dates. A composition turned in late will receive two point less for each day that went by after the scheduled date: for instance a 95/100 composition due on Monday will receive a 93/100 if turned in on Tuesday and a 91/100 if turned in on Wednesday and so on.

• Quizzes/assessment One test will follow each thematic unit which will include grammar + vocabulary + cultural questions.

• Midterm and Final Exams There will be a Midterm written Exam in October and a written and oral Final Exam at the end of the semester.

• NO DATE CHANGEis allowed for the Final Exam. If you have a conflict with another language exam, please talk to your instructor and to the registrar to make the appropriate arrangements at least two weeks prior to the date scheduled by the University.NO MAKE-UP change will be allowed for quizzes and midterm exams unless previously arranged with the instructor for EXCEPTIONAL REASONS.

• Oral presentations will also be required during the semester.

• Oral proficiency interviewsDuring the semester, (during midterm and finals) you will have an oral interview with your instructor to determine your level of language proficiency. This will help to improve and evaluate your oral skills in Italian and also will serve as a general assessment for the Italian program.

• All movies listed on the syllabus can be accessed on LATTE. Pease make sure to watch the movies ahead of the time of the discussion in class.

• La TavolaItaliana: There will be several meetings of the Italian Table to give students the opportunity to speak Italian in a relaxed and informal environment. You are required to join this group at least three times during the semester. Please make sure that you are on the UDRS’ mail list.

• Co-curricular activities: You are strongly encouraged to participate to as many as possible co-curricular activities (Italian Table included) outside the classroomas announced by your UDRs and professors according to this semester schedule. Participation in at least 3 events will result in extra-credits.

Tutoring: Brandeis offers a free tutoring service in case you need extra help or you would just like extra practice in Italian. Language courses offer only 52/39 classroom hours to speak, read, write, and listen to Italian. Many students choose to complement those classroom hours with supplementary work with BUGS program. A tutorhas office hours each week when students can drop in for help with written or oral Italian.

Presentational assessment:
