History of Program

Bellevue Select Baseball formed in 2006 through a partnership of the Bellevue Public Schools, Bellevue Junior Sports Association, the city of Bellevue Recreation Department, the Offutt Youth Center and several independent select baseball programs.

In 2007 the Bellevue Public School system adopted the program as their development baseball program to formalize the support they provide to the program and recognized the how the program benefits the high school baseball programs.

Purpose of the Program

Bellevue Select Baseball exists to:

·  Act as the developmental feeder program for Bellevue High School Teams

o  Achieved through extensive high school coaching staff involvement

§  Fall/Winter clinics, coach’s clinics, field support for practice/games

·  Develop two teams each at the 9-14 year old levels and strengthen the player’s core baseball skills

o  Bruins teams are our higher level teams and compete against the best teams in our area

o  Braves teams focus more on development and compete against appropriate levels for their team

Value of Program

Due to the unique relationship the program has with it’s partners, our members receive the following at no cost:

·  Cage Time at the BPS Lied Center and BJSA

o  165 Hours (Valued at $6,600)

·  Clinic Time at the Lied Center

o  20 Clinics (Valued at $10,000)

·  Clinician Time (High School Coaches)

o  20 Clinics (Valued at $8,000)

·  Lied Center Field Time

o  50 Game Times (Valued at $4,000)

·  BPS Elementary School Field Time

o  170 Practice Times (Valued at $8,500)

·  Total services at no cost to our program

o  $37,100.00

Status of Program

·  BJSA provides Administration of program

o  All money is deposited and paid through a independent baseball account

o  The program is included in the BJSA 501 C(3) Non-Profit Status

o  Our Non-Profit number is #

o  This number can be used if companies need it to donate to a team

·  Annual budget is approximately $70,000.00

o  This covers uniforms, equipment, fields, umpires, tournament fees

o  Budget is met through income from

§  Team Fees and Fundraising

o  We are one of the lowest priced programs in the metro area

o  All Coaches are currently volunteers

·  Team Fees for 2009:

o  $75.00 Deposit due when team position is accepted

o  $325.00 for 9 & 10 year old teams

o  $350.00 for 11 & 12 year old teams

o  $375.00 for 13 & 14 year old teams

§  This covers all uniforms, umpires, 4 tournaments(including family entry fees), insurance, team equipment (catchers gear, bases, pitching rubber, helmets)

·  Team Fees for 2010:

o  $200.00 Deposit due when team position is accepted

o  $400 for 9 & 10 year old teams

o  $425 for 10, 11, 12, & 14 year old team

·  We have three organizational fundraisers

o  Our Annual Tournament, Fan Gear Sales, and a Golf Tournament

·  We receive over $50,000 worth of Gym time, Cage time, and Coaching from

Bellevue Public Schools and Bellevue Junior Sports Association

Success of Program

·  We play in the USSSA baseball program

o  This program has four divisions like professional baseball

o  Majors, AAA, AA, and A

o  Our team are based on the players age not school grade

Tryout Process

·  We have open tryouts at the end of each July

·  Tryouts are advertised in the Bellevue Leader and Omaha World Herald

o  Flyers are sent out through BPS (by Bill Richards at the Lied Center)

o  Flyers are also handed out to the Recreation Department teams

§  Board members/Coaches/Parents set up table at the games

·  The High School Coaches lead the selection of players

·  Exact Format is determined by the select coaches

o  Current players may have a condensed tryout

o  Teams may have new players attend a second tryout or scrimmage

·  We had over 200 players tryout for our 2009 teams

Winter Clinics

·  Approximately 20 clinics each year at Lied Center

·  Average attendance of 80-100 players

·  Taught by the High School and Select Coaches

·  Provided access to two Physical Therapy Teams for injury prevention

·  In 2009 we brought the Passion For Pitching clinic in (100 participants)

Fundraising

·  Reps from each team meet in Aug

·  Group select 2 program fundraisers in addition to tournament

o  Currently these are Fan Gear, and a Golf Tournament

o  These will have required participation from all teams

o  After a percentage (20%) is held for overall program all teams will share profits

§  20% is used to buy supplies for organization and fields we use

§  Temporary mounds, Bases at McCann, etc...

§  The Board votes on uses for this money after each season

·  Teams can organize 2 additional fundraisers for their team

o  Teams use this money to play in extra tournaments/World Series, and for extra equipment

Annual Banquet

·  At the completion of each season there is a banquet to celebrate our success

·  A small fee is charge per family to help offset costs

·  Each team is assigned a type of carry in dish to bring

·  Normally held at BJSA at the end of July

Team Management

·  All teams identify Head Coach, Assistants

·  All teams identify a Team Parent and Fundraising Point of Contact

·  All teams participate in our organizational fundraisers (Tournament, Fan Gear, Golf Tournament)

·  All teams must provide an Entry Authority List for access to the Offutt fields

o  Formats are provided each year

·  Each team is provided access to an automated phone communications system

·  Each team is provided a team page on the BJSA.net webpage

·  Basic standards of player management

o  We have no guaranteed play time or positions.

o  We will try and develop players in multiple positions

o  Coaches will identify where the players have the best chance for success

o  Coaches will work to get all players experience in the infield and outfield

o  Some items that can affect positions

§  Left-handers will normally play pitcher, first base, and outfield (

§  Truth is there are few if any lefties in High School, College, or Pros playing catcher, 2B, SS, 3B

§  Catchers and Pitchers may get less rotation, require rest of their arms, or be allowed more time when not catching or pitching

§  These are hard positions to play and we want to develop them for other positions also

§  Attitude of player. Lack of effort in a position will not allow movement to other positions

o  Weekday games offer the best opportunity for shifting positions and batting more then 10 players

§  In tournaments, coaches will usually play the best team possible and only bat 9 or 10

o  Final determination of who, when, how much time in the field and hitting is with the team coach

o  Coaches will identify players that would benefit from moving between the Braves and Bruins teams

·  Number of Games and Tournaments:

o  Teams play between 4-8 tournaments

o  Teams play between 35-60 games (Guideline is below)

§  9’s & 10’s play approx 50 total games

§  11’s & 12’s play approx 50 total games

§  13’s & 14’s play approx 60 total games

·  Team Budget

o  Each team is given a budget to cover the following costs

o  Expenses over these must be paid for by the individual teams

o  Tournaments, Umpires, equipment,

o  The exact amounts change each year but are approximately:

§  9’s & 10’s $

§  11’, 12’s, 13’s, 14’s $

Program Specifics

Equipment:

·  All teams are provided a basic kit of equipment that includes:

o  Full Catcher’s gear, batting helmets if needed, team gear bag

o  Pitching rubber, stake down bases, practice, game and indoor baseballs, whiffle balls

o  Score books

·  The program also has the following for shared use:

o  Pitching mounds, pitching machine

Trading Pins:

·  The board keeps a supply of the approved Bellevue Select Baseball trading pins on hand

o  Teams/Players may purchase these pins for use at large tournaments

o  The pins are sold for a small profit to cover reorder costs and support the program

Practice facilities:

·  Each team is provided scheduled times for the following:

o  Batting cage times at BJSA and the Lied Activity Center (Nov – Mar)

o  Practice Field time (BPS fields, City fields, Offutt fields) (Mar – Jun)

o  Score books

Uniforms:

·  All teams are provided and must wear the standard program uniform:

o  Two jerseys, pants, hat, socks, belt (color/design determined by the Bellevue Select Board)

o  Teams may purchase an additional tournament jersey at their own expense:

§  Each year the board will select the authorized program tournament jersey

§  Tournament jersey must be purchased through our fan gear provider

Post Season:

·  All teams that attend a World Series or National Tournament after our state receive:

o  Paid Entry Fee into their tournament

Tournament Fees:

·  All teams play in one of the Bellevue Tournaments Free

·  The Program pays the entry fees for 2 other tournaments and each team’s state tournament:

o  This includes the gate fees for all covered tournaments

Umpire Fees:

·  The program will pay ½ the umpire fee for each team’s games up to the maximum listed above:

o  Teams must return unused umpire fees due to cancelled games

o  If a team does not use all of it’s allocated umpire fees, they may use the remainder towards an additional tournament

Baseball Board

·  Direction of program is developed by:

o  Bellevue West and Bellevue East Coaching Staffs

§  Provide winter clinics, teach coaches, score tryouts and interview coaches,

o  Director of BJSA

§  Provides administration, financial guidance, liaison with city offices

o  Coordinator to interface with Coaches, BPS, Lied Center and BJSA

§  Schedules clinics/practices, resolves parent/player issues

·  Execution of program is implemented by the Bellevue Select Baseball Board:

Bellevue Select Baseball Program Fundraising Guidelines

Purpose:

Establish guidelines for raising money for the program. The guidelines apply to all teams, coaches, and parents involved in the program. Activities directed and run by BJSA are not included in these guidelines.

Coordination Committee:

·  Fundraising Director from Baseball Select Baseball Board

·  1 Representative from each team

·  Meet monthly as needed to choose, scope and organize events

·  Obtain approval for all events from Bellevue Select Board

Rules:

·  3 organizational fundraising events per year are mandatory for all teams to fully support

o  Golf Tournaments, Fan Gear, Our Tournament

·  All funds raised will be turned into BJSA for deposit into the Baseball account

o  BJSA will then issue checks to individual teams

·  Bellevue Select Baseball will retain 20% of total profits

·  Each team is authorized 2-3 additional team fundraisers to fund tournaments/equipment

o  Proceeds from these events are not subject to the 20% retention
