Boys Volleyball Coaches Meeting Minutes - August 21, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. with the following present:
Paul Sander (BH-BL), Dave Spangler (Niskayuna), Greg Goering (Saratoga), John Coletta (Shenendehowa), Nick Warren (Guilderland), Haven Brown (Colonie), Dan Batcher (Columbia), Jason Wood (Bethlehem), Matt Lopez (Mohonasen), Mike Silver (Shaker) and Mara Wager(Officials-Rules) and Gary Bynon ( Section 2 Boys Volleyball Chairperson)
1. Rules Interpretation –Mara Wager
A.No significant rule changes from last year.
B. The following rules were reviewed:
1. Center Line and net violations.
2. Unsporting conduct by coaches will result in a red card (no yellow card warnings).
C. The NCAA rule that requires the libero to have a solid colored jersey has been waved for high school but the color must be significantly contrasting compared to the other uniforms.
D. Mara Wager () wants to hear about any referee problems/issues.
E. Emphasis should be placed on training score keepers prior to the season
2. Local Tournaments
A. The JV Mid-Season tournament will be held on 9/21 at Shenendehowa. Official referees will not be used and the tournament will be a scrimmage.
B. BH-BL will host a varsity tournament on 9/28. The format will be 12 teams on 3 courts. Teams attending are BH-BL, Colonie, Bethlehem, Columbia, Guilderland, Niskayuna, Saratoga, Shaker, Shen, Mohonasen, Suffern and Baldwinsville.
C. Colonie will host the JV SSC Tournament on 10/26. Team recordsafter the 10/21 matches will be used for seating purposes. Bring 3 vouchers for the referees.
4. All-Star Selection
A. Greg Goering with assistance from Nick Warren will be coordinating the tabulation of the votes, the printing of certificates, the distribution of the awards (Matt Lopez will check with his AD concerning certificates from the Suburban Council) and notification of the media.
B. All coaches will select 12 players and an MVP (none from their own team).
1. Selection will be online
2. Coaches will list and discuss recommended players from their team by 10/15.
3. Voting should be completed by 10/20.
4. Discussion of the voting resultsand final selections will be done during the 10/22 coaches meeting.
5. Additional honorable mentions can be added by the coaches.
5. Exceptional Senior Game
A. Haven Brown and Dan Batcher will be coordinating the event.
B. It will be held in the Columbia school district on a date TBD.
C. A maximum of 3 players from each team will be selected.
D. Teams will be made up of players from the North and South divisions.
E. Shirts for player will be supplied for those who order them. Each team will pay for their players. Sizes and money will be collected at the 10/22 coaches meeting. However, the players
should wear their High School uniform for the match.
6. Sectionals
A. Letter of intent to the section rep by Oct 1.
B. The seating will be done at the coaches meeting on 10/22 using the league records. 2-way Ties will be broken asfollows:
1. Who won head to head. If split:
2. Who won the mostsets in the two head to head matches. If the same:
3. Who won the last match between the 2 teams.
3-way or more ties:
1. Who won the mostsets in the head to head matches. If the same:
2. Point differential in the head to head matches.
3. Once it is down to 2 teams use the 2-way rules.
C. Schedule
1. Quarter-finals (Div 1) – 10/25 at the highest seed
2. Semi – finals – (Div 1) - 10/29 at BH-BL (5:00 and 7:00 PM)
3. Finals – 11/1 at BH-BL (Div 1 at 5:00 PM and Div 2 at 7:00PM).
D. Each team must supply a scorekeeper, libero tracker and a linesperson.
E. Dan Batcher volunteered to put together the program for the tournament. Information must be to him by noon on 10/22.
7. Regional Tournament
The tournament will be 3 team tournaments for both Div 1(Sections 1, 2 and 3) and Div 2 (Sections 2, 3 and 4). The dates and locations have not been finalized yet; however the finals will be on Nov 9. Additional information will follow.
8. State Tournament
A. The tournament will be played on Nov 15 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The winners of the 3 Regional tournamentsfrom both Div 1 and Div 2 will be participating.
B. Gary Bynon discussed the importance of getting at least one volunteer from each team in the league to work the tournament. A work assignment sheetis attached to be brought to the 10/22 meeting.
9. Web Site
A. It was agreed to continue the boys’ volleyball website ( with Brad Thomas acting as the web master.
B.Home teams should e-mail the results of both the varsity and JV matches to Brad ( or 791-7633) after each match.
C. Rosters, schedule changes, all-star selection information and other items of interest should also be sent. Rosters for both varsity and JV should be sent as soon as possible.
D. Match and set records will be on the website and additional match information will be on Facebook.
10. Other Business
When there is available space for the varsity to warm up and upon agreement of the coaches, a third JV set (without refs) will be played until the varsity individual team warm-up starts (12 minutes on the clock).
11. The next meeting is scheduled for 7:00PM on Oct 22 at Colonie H.S.
- Mandatory meeting – no games should be scheduled on this date
