Ok. Thank you for taking this quiz. Please take a moment and add up all of your checks for each section. When you are finished, I will explain what learning style you are. This should be very exciting for you to know, because it explains how you learn! It’s a secret I wish someone told me when I was your age. Are you ready?

My notes:

Before testing: Be honest with yourself. Keep the papers covered. Your neighbor is totally different than you.

The data that you and I receive from this is very important for the rest of the school year.

Emily:::::: Boxes. Have the students put there learning style(s) on five or six slips of paper, one for each of their teachers. They will put their last name, first name on the slip. We will put them in ABC order and give to their teachers.

This is called a learning styles inventory because it tells you how you learn. Some of you may have tied or came close to tying for more than one category. That is ok. I have two learning styles but I also have checks in every category as well.

Here we go.

Style #1: Linguistic (Verbal): You like words. You using have to write down or tell someone you through processes to think stuff through. A quiet room may be your worst nightmare. You need an outlet for words. This year in my room I hope I allow you enough opportunities to talk, discuss, and write. If not, Please send me a note and drop it on my side desk. At home, you can email me at my address. I check it every night usually around 8:00. Everyone please write this in your planners now.

Style #2: Logical (Analytical): You guys are the ones who want it orderly. You learn by using thinking maps and diagrams. You like to know the routine and how things work. We will be using your skills this year when we diagram sentences and break down grammar rules. You should be good at diagraming complex sentences. Sorry no math or science per say, but I will include that information just for you!

Style #3: Visual: You are my artsy people. You learn by seeing pictures and illustrations. You learn by seeing the diagram but more importantly, you need to draw it. Many times, you will be allowed to take notes in picture format. HOWEVER, this is not art class. If you are Picasso and plan to redo your work a 100 times, do not draw everything. Our time is very limited. Sketch it out. You need to pick projects that involve art in some way. We will have some word art projects that I think you will love. For those of us that are not artistic, look around the room. This guys will be your best partner if you need something drawn in a group project. Make sure you include one of these guys in your group.

Style #4:Bodily-Kinesthetic: My mover and shakers. You are ready to move right now. You like to dance, play ball of some kind, or skateboard. You are constantly on the move. This does not mean you have ADHD although you might. You will learn better if we get up and move. I think things out better if I can walk around. I put in the ear buds and go for a walk. I do my best thinking on the lawn mower. Anyway, we will include some hand movements to our songs. You might want to choose acting or skits to have some movement. Look for your verbal people. You may there help with the words, but you can help them put the skit into action. Also during my class, you will be allowed to move around some.

Style #5: Musical. You learn better with music. It may just mean having background music. Sorry, I can’t play music all of the time, but I will at times to keep it all fair. You do learn better when you put information to music. For example, you may know the continents because someone taught you a song. My daughter learned many bible verses, because her book had a cassette tape with it. Every verse had a quirky little son to go with it. We will have songs to go with the parts of speech. I hope this helps. For those of you that are not musical, you will just have to put up with us musical people, but I promise I will try not to pick on you for trying. My musical voice is not too great, but I could play it for you with the sheet music.

Style #6 Interpersonal My talkers!!! You may be interpersonal and verbal. You need to be with others. You like group work or make it group work when it wasn’t supposed to be. You can’t help it. You are drawn to others like glue. You need to bounce ideas off others. You need confirmation that you are on the right road. You need to be affirmed about the answer. I will try my best to allow all of this interaction to happen. This class is large enough for you to ask a neighbor or two before you ask me. I will do everything I can to get to you, but help yourself out and trust your neighbor.

Style #7 Intrapersonal My loners. Interpersonal people leave them allow. You guys despise working in groups. You would assume to get a root canal than work with the most talkative person in class. I will try my best to protect you from that as much as possible. Sometimes you just have to play the teacher’s game. For example, you will be asked to make presentation this year in my class and others. It prepares you for those 15 minute required presentations in 8th grade. Some of you may have marked interpersonal but you really are not. You may just have trouble reading. If you have trouble reading, try to divide up with others that can read a better. If all of you get in the same group, you may have trouble (esp. in other classes, science and SS.).

Ok now you know your learning style. I did not receive this information until college. It’s like it is a big teacher secret or conspiracy that students are not supposed to know. You will be asked to make project this year or work in groups. You need to pick your topic and project type wisely. If you can’t draw don’t choose a big poster. Maybe you should do a PowerPoint or Prezi. If you can’t sing or play and instrument, don’t try a song because all of your friends are. Be true to yourself and know what you are best at and go for it.

On the other hand, try new things! Don’t box yourself out of learning something new. All of you will be assigned related art’s classes that are out of your comfort zone. Music, art, computers, Spanish., etc. You will survive. Have fun and do your best.

As far as groups, don’t just choose your neighbors. If you are in SS and need to make a map, you might need an artistic person to make your analytical ideas shine. Get a varied group on your team. It will make your ideas look good!
