BOYS RANCH RESIDENTS TO GET GRAPHIC PRESENTATION ON RECKLESS DRIVING

When: / Monday October 19, 2009
8:30 a.m.
Sacramento County Boys Ranch – 14049 Boys Ranch Road, Sac, 95683
What: / Twenty –five Sacramento County Boys Ranch residents will participate in a teen safety prevention presentation called, “Driving It Home”. The presentation is designed for high school students,to combat teen driving fatalities and injuries. The program is offered bythe Sacramento County District Attorney's Office with funding from OTS and facilitated by Elk Grove Police DepartmentCSO Misty Dailey.
Why: / It is common for minors who are committed to the Boys Ranch to have driving violations in their history. Vehicle Code citations include vehicle theft, evading, reckless driving, driving without a license, etc. The majority of minors are 15 – 17 and if they do not have a license, they may seek one as soon as they turn 16 and are released. Some of what the “Driving It Home” presentation stresses:
·  Using peer pressure to keep friends from making poor decisions in and out of a vehicle
·  The impact a crash has on family & friends
·  What distractions kill teens in cars
·  What really happens to a body in a crash & the impact on family and friends
·  And other topics that teens don’t receive information on anywhere else.
Visuals: / An actual crashed car from a Sacramento area teenager who lost his life in an accident that was not racing or drinking related. The content of the videos and photos are very graphic and real.
Important Note: / Media will be able to observe and record the presentation however no interviews of the wards at the Ranch will be permitted. Any video or photography cannot include any identifiable features such as the face or profile of the minors at the Ranch. Program administrators and Officer Dailey will be available for interviews.
More Info: / The Boys Ranch is a 24-hour secured commitment facility designed for older, more sophisticated juvenile male wards that have a history of serious or extensive delinquent behavior. Goals of a commitment to Boys Ranch include accountability, counseling, pro-social behavior and eventual reunification with family. The living quarters are dormitory style with one 100 bed unit and one 25 bed honor unit.
