IntroductiontotheAdultEducationLearnerTechnologyStandards

Technologyisrevolutionizinghowpeoplelearn,communicate,pursueleisureactivities,anddotheirjobsin today’srapidlychanging,information-richsociety.Technologyisimpactingeveryaspectofourlives,fromhowweaccessgovernmentservicestohowwecommunicateandgainknowledge.Tobesuccessfulinasocietymarkedbytherapiddevelopmentofnewinformationandcommunicationtechnologies,adultsmustbeabletousetechnologyeffectively.Adulteducationlearnersshouldbeprovidedtheopportunitytousetechnologyaspartoftheirinstructionalprogram.Theuseoftechnologyininstructioncanenhancetheabilityofadultlearnerstofind,analyzeandevaluateinformation;solveproblemsandmakedecisions;communicate,collaborateandshareideas;tobeinformed,responsibleandcontributingcitizens;andtolearnhowtolearnandkeepupwiththeworldasitchanges.

TheMarylandAdultEducationLearnerTechnologyStandardsaredesignedtoguideteachersindesigninginstructionthatissupportedbytechnology.Learnersbecomeengagedinactivitiesthatintegrateinstructionalcontentandrelevanteducationaltechnologyskills.Effectiveintegrationenableslearnerstoselecttechnologytoolstoobtain,analyze,synthesizeandpresentinformationandideas.Ideally,technologyshouldbecomeasaccessibleandintegralasallotherinstructionaltools.

Thetechnologystandardsspecifywhatalearnerinanadulteducationprogramshouldknowandbeabletodo;theydescribetherangeofdesirableknowledgeandskills.Thestandardsaremeanttoprovideaguideandensureconsistencyacrossprogramsandclassrooms.Whilethestandardsguideinstruction,theintegrationoftechnologywillbeindividualizedtoachievelearnerandlocalprogramgoals.

Thispublicationisdesignedtoprovideteachersandeducationaldecisionmakerswithstandardsandperformanceindicatorstoguidethemincreatingtechnology-supportedlearningenvironmentsthatshouldpreparelearnersto:

Themeaningfuluseoftechnologysupportsinstruction.Technologyshouldbeusedwiththespecificpurposeofenhancingtheinstructionofcontentorspecificskills.Teachersmustanalyzethepotentialbenefitsoftechnologyandselecttheappropriatelearnerstandardsbasedonacademiclearninggoals.Thispurposefuluseenablestheachievementofbothadultliteracylearningoutcomesandtechnologycompetencies.

The AdultEducationTeacherTechnologyStandardsspecifywhatateachershould knowandbeabletodotoimplementthefullrangeofadultlearnertechnologystandardsininstruction.Theteacherstandardsaremeanttoprovideaguideandensureconsistencyacrossprogramsandclassrooms.Whilethestandardsguideinstruction,theintegrationoftechnologywillbeindividualizedtoachievelearnerandlocalprogramgoals.

Technologyisanareainwhichteachersmayfindthemselvesbeyondtheirowncomfortlevel.Itisessentialforteacherstotakeadvantageofprofessionaldevelopmentandotheropportunitiestoexpandtheirknowledgebase.Instructorhesitationandlimitationsintheareaoftechnologyneednotlimitlearners.

Theteacherstandardsaredesignedtoprovideteachersandeducationaldecisionmakerswiththestandardsandperformanceindicatorstoguidethedevelopmentofskillsteachersneedtoeffectivelyusetechnologytoenhanceinstruction.Tocreatetechnologysupportedlearningenvironmentsappropriatetotheskillsandinstructionalneedsofadultlearners,teachersshouldbeableto:
