Queen Mary’s College operates several income generating facilities across its vibrant 25 acre campus, including a leisure centre, theatre and facility lettings. Central Studio is a small professional theatre specifically designed to provide space as well as entertainment to the community hosting a range of events and performances, including live music, children’s theatre, comedy, conferencing and parties.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The ideal applicant for this role is someone wishing to gain experience of how the hospitality and entertainment sector works in order to enhance their CV and professional skills. Queen Mary’s College is looking for individuals to work in both Central Studio and Queen Mary’s Hall theatre foyers. By rota, the successful candidates will work in one of three capacities; Front Of House, Bar Tend or Box Office Assistant. A flexible and mature outlook to working in public entertainments is required by all candidates.

Essential Criteria

v  An interest in the entertainment and hospitality sector

v  Good communication skills

v  The ability to work independently and use initiative

v  You should be willing and available to work both evenings and weekends

v  Flexible in your attitude to a working schedule

v  Cash handling experience

Desirable Criteria

v  Ideally you should have experience of bar, shop or theatre work

v  Be able to demonstrate computer and numeracy skills

As this work involves working with young people, all successful candidates will be required to undertake a DBS check.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Bar Tender

Accountable to: Commercial Operations Manager and Licensee

v  To serve customers with beverages and confectionery before, during the interval and after all performances in either the Central Studio or Queen Mary’s Hall bars

v  To cover the bar for the full duration of the performance

v  To prepare interval drinks as and when required

v  To maintain the cleanliness of the bar and foyer area throughout the performance

v  To thoroughly clean the bar foyer area and dispose of bottles at the close of business

v  To restock the drinks coolers as and when necessary

v  To advise the Duty Officer of any stock deficiencies

v  To carry out cleaning of bar equipment as and when required

v  To cash up the tills at the end of the night and lock all takings in the safe

v  To carry out any other duty as may reasonably be requested by the Commercial Operations Manager or deputies

Box Office Assistant

Accountable to: Commercial Operations Manager

v  To deal with customer enquiries and ticket sales

v  To perform cashing up in accordance with college financial procedures

v  To serve behind the bar as required

v  To cash up the tills at the end of the night and lock all takings in the safe

v  To perform general administration and office duties as required

v  As and when required, assist with Community & Lettings customers in various locations of the college.

Front of House Assistant

Accountable to: Commercial Operations Manager

Responsible for: Front of House Volunteers

v  To ensure a high level of customer service during performances

v  To liaise with the performers and technicians to ensure that all shows are performed in a healthy and safe environment and ensure they start on time and run as smoothly as possible

v  To supervise the FOH volunteers so that all specific aspects of FOH management for each show are dealt with

v  To act upon, or refer back to the Commercial Operations Manager, any comments or issues raised by customers

v  To assist in ensuring that building security is maintained in all Front of House and Back Stage areas throughout the show, within procedures detailed in Central Studio’s operational guidelines

v  To assist with the complete evacuation of the public spaces of Central Studio or Queen Mary’s Hall should the necessity arise

CONTRACTUAL INFORMATION

Type of employment: Casual

Hours: Typically 6pm till close, weekends (variable).

Days: As per rota – From 1 to 5 shifts per week

Rate of pay: £7.68 per hour plus paid holiday allowance (12.07%)
