Job title:Deputy Manager

Responsible to:Manager/Chair of Committee

Purpose of the job:To provide support to the Manager in the day to day running of

the setting and carry out specific duties as advised. To be responsible for leading the setting in the absence of the Manager. To work as a keyperson and as part of the team under the direction of the Manager to provide safe, high quality

education and care for pre-school children.

Main duties:

  1. To monitor the understanding and implement inclusive practice into the setting to ensure all children have the opportunity to learn, interact and fulfil their potential on a daily basis
  2. Support all staff within the setting and engage a positive team ethos
  3. Work alongside the Manager and other staff to ensure that the values of the setting are adhered to
  4. To act as Safeguarding Officer in the absence of the Manager
  5. To supervise the work of all keypersons to ensure high quality observations, planning and record keeping are carried out for each individual child
  6. To offer support and assistance to children, parents and staff in regards to Special Educational Needs.
  7. To carry out annual staff appraisals and supervision meetings as directed by the Manager
  8. To be responsible for the planning and preparation of seasonal, celebration and festival activities.
  9. To be responsible for ensuring maths trolley, book trolley, mark making trolley and next steps folder are all fully stocked and up to date.
  10. To act as two-year-old advocate for the setting
  11. To maintain staff rotas
  12. To update and review Progress Tracker
  13. To act as Health and Safety Officer for the setting
  14. To set up the hall for the daily sessions and to help tidy away at the end of the session
  15. To act as Keyperson to a group of children, liaising closely with parents/carers and ensuring each individual child’s needs are met and activities planned are suitable for the age range of the children.
  16. To engage with children, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulation.
  17. To attend staff meeting as required
  18. To attend training courses as required to ensure qualifications are current.
  19. To undergo annual staff appraisal and subsequent supervision.
  20. To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other which is learned as part of the job.
  21. To ensure that activities are carried out in a safe and responsible manner in accordance with statutory responsibilities and to advise the Manager of any concerns over children, equipment etc.
  22. To read, acknowledge and understand all documentation and policies issued by the setting including the EYFS and the terms, conditions, policies and procedures (this forms part of your Contract of Employment).
  23. To ensure that the setting offers the highest standard of physical and emotional care, health and safety and personal and food hygiene at all times.
  24. Work requires bending, kneeling and crouching for periods of time and may also involve lifting or holding children during planned activities, and changing nappies/toileting duties.
  25. Significant elements of inside and outside work, including leading outdoor learning.
  26. Understanding and being able to implement inclusive practice into the setting to ensure all children have the opportunity to learn, interact and fulfil potential.
  27. To pro-actively identify children with potential development concerns and raise them with the SENCO and encourage the child’s full integration within the setting.
  28. Working to establish an appropriate safe and secure learning environment.
  29. Promoting positive values, attitudes and good child behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging children to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
  30. Having a positive approach to continuous professional development.
  31. To actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace, ensuring setting policies and procedures at all times.
  32. To be flexible within the working practices of the setting. Be prepared to help when needed, including to undertake certain domestic jobs.
  33. Be willing to provide cover (at short notice) when required.
  34. To have an understanding of basic ICT skills.
  35. To maintain resources as designated by the Manager
  36. To undertake extra responsibilities as and when directed by the Manager

Person Specification

Essential / Desirable
Skills, aptitude, knowledge and experience
  • At least 3 years’ experience of working within and Early Years Environment
  • Ability to plan effective learning and care programmes either under appropriate supervision and guidance or in collaboration
  • Ability to work independently using own initiative
  • Ability to self-evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities
  • Ability to relate to children and adults including other professionals/carers/parents
  • Ability to demonstrate and promote good practice in line with the ethos of the setting both indoors and outdoors
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks whilst ensuring children, colleagues, parents and carers are respected and listened to.
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Effectively communicate with adults and children
  • Good written, verbal and non-verbal communication

  • Experience of working with children with Special Educational Needs
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Experience of completing planning to meet the needs of all the children attending the setting
  • Experience of supervising a team of people
  • Ability to reflect on learning and care needs and use this knowledge to impact on children’s outcomes e.g. in planning, procurement of resources, IEP’s, communication with parents
  • Experience of working with other agencies and professionals
  • Knowledge and understanding of the type of external support that is available to support children’s development and how to access these services
  • Ability to interact with children and support their involvement in physical activities an outdoor play

  • Experience of having kept written records of children’s achievement including observations

Qualifications
  • Relevant level 3 childcare qualification

  • Food Hygiene level 1
  • Completion of Safeguarding awareness course
  • Training in relevant strategies e.g. particular learning areas i.e. quality improvement, observation and record keeping, Communication and language, literacy etc.
  • Full working knowledge of relevant policies/codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation
  • Requirement to participate in training/development as and when identified by the manager as essential for performance of the post
  • Understanding of principles of child development and learning processes and in particular barriers to learning
  • Paediatric first aid certificate

NB: This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Applicant must be prepared to disclose any convictions they may have and any orders, which have been made against them.

This post also requires an Enhanced CRB check to be carried out as there may be periods of unsupervised access to children.
