Hours: Generally available to membership and staff from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday-Thursday and 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM on Friday.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Position Reports to:President/CEO

POSITION PURPOSE

The Controller is responsible for preparing the accounting records, overseeing the asset/liability analysis functions, and managing the investments of the Credit Union. The Controller is also responsible for managing disaster recover, vendor management, and information technology.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions.Develop and prescribe adequate financial procedures to ensure compliance with established policy and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). (50%)

Expectations

a)Establish accounting systems that will produce the financial reports necessary for operation of the credit union.

b)Prepare accurate reports necessary for management, the board of directors and regulators to show the financial condition of the credit union.

c)Present financial reports in formats that are easy for management and the board to read and understand.

d)Keep current on accounting principles and practices through research and personal development.

e)Incorporate recommendations for accounting changes from examiners and auditors into the financial operations.

f)Develop investment policies and procedures that protect the credit union’s assets while maximizing return.

g)Manage the credit union’s investment portfolio within board approved policies.

h)Prepare all fiscal reporting for regulatory agency and government reports, including the 5300 call report.

i)Maintain the budget and work with management to develop and document key budget assumptions.

  1. Lead the asset/liability management processes. (10%)

Expectations

a)Chair the asset/liability committee.

b)Recommend asset/liability policies and procedures that are appropriate and reflect industry best practices.

c)Understand how to use asset/liability modeling tools and the reports that are generated.

d)Create, maintain, and ensure compliance with Financial Management Policy and Liquidity Policy.

  1. Manage all aspects of the card and ATM network programs. (15%)

Expectations

a)Research and resolve any ATM/ card discrepancies and disputes.

b)Ensure ATM and card programs are compliant with all Federal and State rules, regulations, law, and credit union policies and procedures.

  1. Manage disaster recovery, vendor management, and information systems. (25%)

Expectations

a)Test the disaster recovery plan and perform table top simulation.

b)Support local area and wide area network hardware and software to ensure that back end functions, systems, PCs, servers, and all peripheral products are operational.

c)Research and diagnose IT problems on PCs to include software applications, systems integration, or individual hardware problems. Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve the problem.

d)Install and test new software both for the network and for individual users.

e)Administer the phone system.

f)Perform due diligence on all vendors and maintain ongoing vendor status.

g)Create, maintain and ensure compliance with Vendor Management Policy, Information Systems Security Policy, Internet Policy,and Password Policy.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or other related area of study preferred

Experience:

Five years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a credit union.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of accounting theories and practices.
  • Knowledge of accounting standards and regulations that applies to Credit Unions.
  • Knowledge of general ledger chart of account relationships.
  • Knowledge of all phases of credit union member services and data processing operations.
  • Knowledge of asset liability management practices.
  • Knowledge of ATM networks and debit card dispute processing.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use standard business technology.
  • Knowledge of information technology.
  • Knowledge of vendor management practices.

SKILLS

  • Skill in entering accounting records.
  • Skill in monitoring various transactions to ensure proper reporting and recording.
  • Skill in performing analysis of information obtained from a variety of sources.
  • Skill in developing accounting reports for management and the Board.
  • Skill in working with auditors and examiners.
  • Skill in resolving network and other technology issues, including the ATM network.

ABILITIES:

  • Ability to ensure that all General Leger accounts assigned are in balance and supporting documents are prepared timely, accurately, and do not contain stale items.
  • Ability to adapt to new vendor and software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the Board of Directors, including the ability to clearly communicate complex information
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the staff, members and volunteers.
  • Ability to resolve debit card disputes.

The work environment is an office setting with moderate noise levels.

Average, ordinary visual acuity is necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Physical Strength:

The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 30 lbs.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest. Percentage rates and commissions.
  • Ability to perform basic statistical calculations including frequency distributions, reliability and validity of tests, analysis of variance, correlation techniques and factor analysis.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general policy/procedures, documents, business periodicals, professional journals and federal and state regulations.
  • Ability to prepare and make comprehensive presentations, participate in formal debate, and professionally communicate before an audience.
