Dear Dennis,

The NSWSRU Clubs, Competitions & Rules Sub-committee recently reviewed your club’s 2006 judiciary record. The committee members were particularly concerned at the number of referee abuse offences recorded by Blacktown RFC.

The committee reinforces with you in the strongest possible terms its abhorrence of referee abuse. The NSWSRU Board knows that referee abuse is far too prevalent in Suburban Rugby and it is taking action to see it stamped out.

The recommended penalties for referee abuse have been increased and there will be close supervision of clubs with a history of referee abuse. In addition to penalties handed down to individuals, clubs will also be liable to penalty.

Blacktown is therefore put on notice that a range of penalties can be enacted against the club, and its continued participation in future competitions could be reviewed, if further cases of referee abuse are recorded against Blacktown members this year.

Blacktown RFC is required to distribute this message to all of its members. Coaches in particular must be asked to set an example. At team meetings and during training and warm-up sessions coaches should be reinforcing the Union’s intolerance of referee abuse and warning of the dire consequences to the individual, the team and the club if it occurs.

The behaviour of spectators is also the responsibility of the club and abuse of match officials from the crowd will not be tolerated.

Yours sincerely,

Tim Richards
