Black Student Union Constitution

Article I

Name:

Section 1:This organization shall be known as the Black Student Union Club, hereby known as BSU.

ArticleII

Purpose:

Section 1:Black Student Union was created to bring students of African American descent, and students of other descents,together to build a better sense of community. Black Student Union will not only help promote diversity but bring pride, unity to our community on campus. Black Student Union will focus on the social aspect of our campus and ensure that there are activities to do within the campus that is of black studentinterest. We will also strive to educate people on African American history and culture that exhibits our beauty creativity and struggle.

Article III

Membership:

Section 1: Membership is open to all full-time and part-time undergraduate students of Westfield State University who have paid their student activities fee for the current academic semester. Memberships include voting, and non-voting.

Section 2:Members are considered to be active if they attend and participate in fifty percent (50%) of the meetings or more. This is true as well when determining who is eligible to vote. The removal of voting rights due to lack of participation is the consequence of not attending fifty percent of the BSU meetings.

Article IV

Officers:

Section 1:The office positions for the Black Student Union are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Public Relations Officer.

Section 2:The President will preside at meetings, schedule meetings times, call special meetings, and run the election process.

The Vice President assumes the President's duties in his/her absence, schedules meeting/practice rooms.

The Treasurer will keep all financial records, notifies organization of financial issues, and prepare budget/allocation requests.

Secretary will take and distribute minutes of all club meetings, recorder keeper (current and past members, files minutes, etc.), club historian, notify members of meetings, handles the official correspondence of the club.

Public Relations Officer will promote activities of the BSUand to encourage the student population to get involved with the BSU.

Section 3:The officers will be elected at the end of the current spring semester for the upcoming year to follow.

Section 4: To be eligible for an official position, you have to be a member of the BSUfor at least one (1) year and in good standing with the BSU. One (1) member can hold only one (1) BSU Executive Board position at a time.

Section 5:The term of office for each officer is two (2) semesters.

Article V

Advisors:

Section 1:The BSU will select an advisor based on if we believe he/she is in the best interest of the BSU, chosen by election or executive decision. The advisor can be any faculty, staff, or librarian.

Section 2:The faculty advisor's main responsibility is to help guide the BSU to fulfill its missions.

Article VI

Elections:

Section 1:Self-nomination will be the only form of nomination.This shows BSU that the individuals who are applying are motivated enough to get the position they want.

Section 2:Votes will be cast during club meetings and will be tallied by president, who will only vote in the event of a tie.

Section 3:No election may be held if there is not a quorum of fifty percent (50%) of the club members plus one (1) present at the meeting.

Article VII

Meetings:

Section 1:The club will meet no less than once (1) week. Members will be notified via e-mail and cell phone. The officers will meet every two (2) weeks.

Section 2:The officers may hold special meeting with or without advisor.

Section 3:The President will call special meetings only if it is necessary.

Article VIII

Vacancies:

Section 1:A new election will be held if a vacancy occurs.If an advisor leaves then the club will vote to appoint a new one.

Article IX

Amending Procedure:

Section 1:This constitution may be amended by fifty percent (50%) plus one (1) of club members and if approved by the Rules and Regulations committee of the Student Government Association.

Article X

Removal from office:

Section 1: If an officer is not performing his/her duties, he/she may be removed by a four-fifths (4/5) vote of the executive board.

Section 2:The club will remove an advisor by calling a meeting if an advisor is not performing his/her duties, he/she may be removed by a four-fifths (4/5) vote of the executive board.
