Lesson Summary: Learn about properties of water (ex. color ) through sensory experiences and crafts.
Benchmark Focus: P.ME.P.B.IV.1.e.1a The student will identify attributes/properties of common objects.
Materials: Ocean book ex.) I'm the Biggest Thing In The Ocean by Kevin Sherry, Earth coloring page, Earth photo, ocean photos, green and blue tissue paper, glue, paintbrushes, cups, water, salt, food coloring, fish coloring pages
Anticipatory Set: Read an ocean related book to the students.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1.) Sit students around carpet and read story. Emphasize the color of the ocean.
2.) Show photos of the Earth. Talk about the blue water and green land in the photo. Show a globe of available. Show additional pictures of the ocean emphasizing the blue color.
3.) Have students move to the table.
4.) Show students outline coloring page of Earth. Show and tell how to put blue tissue paper for water and green tissue paper for land. Have color cards available for students to use to make choices.
5.) Work with students to cover page with glue and begin to out tissue paper on. Note if students pick correct color when directed. Do they require verbal or physical prompts?
6.) When picture is finished, move back to carpet.
7.) Compare student made pictures to the photo of Earth. Talk about the colors seen.
8.) Next time: Read ocean book and have students paint a ocean picture with salt-water colored blue and green.
9.) Direct students to paint the water part of the picture blue and the fish green.
10.) When finished, talk about the colors. When the pictures dry, have the students feel their paintings. The salt should make a rough texture.
Plan For Independent Practice: Have students sort picture cards/objects into categories based on if their colored blue or not.
Closure: Talk with students about what they did. Emphasize the color of the water and tissue paper.
Assessment Based On Objectives: Observe students and note if any can sort objects correctly. Note if any pick correct color of tissue paper for water.
Adaptations: Have students use color cards to choose which color tissue or paint they need. Use adapted grippers with paintbrushes.
Extensions: More ocean crafts: fingerpaint a paper plate Earth with green handprints for land.
