Discussion and Observation; Science Ideas
Discuss types of birds to be seen; migration; feeding – reasons why birds need a little help; what to feed and how. Set up a bird table, observe and record birds that feed and which foods are preferred.
Art and Craft
Individual bird pictures – some of which can be cut out and used in display – from observation, or using photographs as guide, or from fantasy. Use fabric collage, feather collections, wood shavings, wool, curled paper, overlapping layers of fringed tissue; also crayon and felt tip pens, or paint using fine brushes. Bird models from junk.
Maths
Counting birds on bird table at set times each day. Number of each kind seen. Largest and smallest birds. Weigh amounts of food given in grammes.
Other Language Ideas
Compose letter to RSPB asking for bird food and other information.
Bird names. Vocabulary – feather, hop, wing, beak, fly, peck, etc.
Movement/Drama – Bird-like movements – quick, light steps; hopping, pecking, flying away.
Music-Making
Imitating bird calls (listen to recordings) using voices and instruments.
Books and Stories – Books about birds.

Display Board
Pale blue sky, rag-rolled in deeper blue (dip rag in paint and roll or wipe gently but randomly over surface).
Bare trees – torn paper, painted brown.
Snow on ground – white paint, then potato and sponge print in just the faintest tinge of palest blue.
Bird table – Tape together and paint cardboard tubes. Bury one end in wide box weighted with stones or sand. Glue to other end a cutdown and painted cereal box to form bird table. Cover display table and weighted box with white sheeting. Display also bird models, bowls of bird food, greetings cards and tea towels with appropriate motifs; also books, and book of children’s writing.
