Member Updates

Saleena mentioned the memo that went out about having meetings at school libraries. Jackson librarian mentioned that she is willing to host as well.

Carolyn – Saturday November 19, Jackson Branch of the OCL will have their grand opening of their makerspace.

Kristen – Melanie Conklin was at the WOPL. Kristen said that she was as engaging as a presenter with the kids during a writing workshop.

If anyone is interested in contacting local NJ author, Melanie Conklin*, she can be reached at:

*Melanie Conklin, author
Penguin/G.P. Putnam’s Sons
345 Hudson Street
14th floor
New York, New York 10014

Complete contact information can be found here:

Keisha will contact Melanie Conklin and Rosy regarding the 2017 NJLA Conference.

Darby – shared that the Clayton HS makerspace is open. NJLA is doing the school librarian task force and spoke on partnership between NJLA and NJSL. Take a look at the blog. “Unlock student potential”:

New Jersey School Librarian Conference - Saleena reached out to NJSL about NJLA having a table at the conference on November 17 & 18. YA Section will have information at the table about the YA section & GTSBA. Saleena will reach out to Candace (CSS Pres) and see if she or other members of CSS will be interested in going to NJSL November 17-19. Saleena will create a Doodle poll to see how many people are interested in going; will send to Keisha to send out to YA Section.

Stephanie says her library will have their first member athletes program at GCLS. Special Olympics Young Athletes program (from NJLA).

Update on Saleena’s mentoring program: isn’t working out as well as she had thought. High School doesn’t want to collaborate on the public library’s terms. Group of students has created, “The Society for the Creative Innovators” who will be putting on a “big idea fare” to encourage ideas and an entrepreneur fix, showing off innovations that will help in different areas. Date will be scheduled for some time in March 2017. December 17 will be an informational meeting.

Updates from around the state

NJ State Library: with exception to the Grants for Mobile Mini-Maker Spaces (see September’s notes) Sharon Rawlins doesn’t have many updates to share; deadline is November 1 to apply. Grant information is listed under the state library’s website:

Additionally, Sharon is working with Rutgers to do bilingual storytime. This grant will focus on ways to get more libraries involved, and conducting the program primarily in Spanish. This storytime will be a bilingual storytime with a math and science focus. Libraries should have a staff member who is bilingual or member of the community who can come in and be the Spanish storytime. Prospective date is Fall 2017.

LLNJ update:

Webinars

LibraryLinkNJ webinars are presented free of charge to members of the New Jersey library community. We archive recordings of the webinars, along with presenters’ slides or handouts, for easy access following the live event.

Thinking Outside the Stacks for Innovative Community Partnerships

Presented by Beth Saxton

October 19, 2016, 3:00-4:30 pm

Registration is open

Youth services librarians are all about getting the right resources for their patrons, but our range is often limited when seeking resources for ourselves. Librarianship shares many commonalities with other fields in the recreation, education, and even business sectors. Join us as we identify these fields and key resources within them, learn how to apply those ideas to programs and services within the library, and explore how we can use these similarities to build relationships with potential community partners.

Learning Objectives:

After participating in this webinar library staff will be able to:

  • Identify fields outside of librarianship whose knowledge enhances our practice as youth library staff, and key resources in those fields
  • Apply knowledge and resources from other fields to best serve youth in the library and the community
  • Explain the ways library staff skills and knowledge can benefit youth-serving partners in your community

The Right & Proper Way to Play Mind Tricks on Your Supervisor

Presented by Brett Bonfield

November 16, 2016 | 2:30-3:30 pm

Registration is open

You have a great idea and wonder how you can present it in a persua... forget this. I'm going to give you a rare opportunity to listen in while we talk, library leader to library leader. Yo, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, Leaders, and other muckety mucks: Isn't it nice that most of the people you supervise almost never give you any suggestions at all, and the few suggestions you do get are boring, impenetrable, or impossible? If you want to go on coming up with your own ideas and ignoring the few ideas your colleagues bother to present, then I recommend *not* letting them participate in the "The Right and Proper Way to Play Mind Tricks on Your Supervisor" webinar, which will not only teach them to read your thoughts, it'll teach them to BLOW YOUR MIND. And who wants that, right?

This program is offered in collaboration with MentorNJ, a joint initiative funded by the New Jersey State Library and LibraryLinkNJ, The New Jersey Library Cooperative.
