REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR

BIOSYSTEMS DYNAMICS SUMMER INSTITUTE (BDSI) RESEARCH TEAMS

2014 Faculty Participant Application

Submission deadline: January 15, 2014

OVERVIEW

Lehigh University is the recent recipient of another four-year grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to fund undergraduate science initiatives in the life sciences. The initiative at Lehigh will continue to focus on expanding the existing interdisciplinary culture at the University, focusing on building cross-disciplinary approaches in undergraduate courses and in undergraduate research activities.

Undergraduate summer research opportunities under this initiative include participation in an interdisciplinary research team sponsored by the Biosystems Dynamics Summer Institute. Research teams will be composed of faculty from different disciplines, graduate students and post-doctoral associates, and undergraduate students who will work together on a common research project. A 10 week summer program will include an intensive research experience for students, research discussion groups, interdisciplinary research workshops for writing and presentation skills, research seminars, and social activities. Participating faculty will also participate in a mentoring workshop prior to the start of the BDSI program.

We invite applications from teams of Lehigh faculty to participate in this program as leaders of interdisciplinary research groups exploring questions in the biosciences. A major goal of this program is to provide research training experiences that emphasize the relationships between biology and other disciplines including chemistry, physics, environmental science, computer science, mathematics, and engineering.

FUNDING

Research teams will be funded under this program for the summer of 2014. It is expected that each team will be led by two faculty members (*), each from different disciplines. Full funding for a research team includes $44,375 of support. Funding is available for undergraduate and graduate student summer stipends, and laboratory supplies ($14,575). Under new HHMI funding guidelines, faculty summer research stipends are no longer an allowable cost. Each team is eligible to receive funding for up to 4 undergraduate students (at $4,200 each) and 2 graduate students (at $6,500 each).

*Note that teams may consist of more than two faculty members if the project warrants such. Some teams may be funded at less than 100%.
