Biosuit Model Performance Task

Where: Gulf of Mexico

Who: Oil/Gas Pipeline Engineer

Performance Task: Deconstruct and reconstruct a damaged underwater pipeline.

Biosuit parts needed:

  1. Waterproof gloves
  2. Helmet that allows for underwater breathing and vision in a murky environment.

Performance Test Explained:

Test will consist of a large plastic bin of muddy (brown) water that contains a pvc pipe attached to another with a damaged pvc elbow. The student must take apart the two pipes and replace the damaged elbow with a new one while seeing and breathing underwater, and without getting their hands wet.

*Students will not submerge entire head, but will breathe through a snorkel, that you will pretend to attach to an air tank.

Biosuit Model Performance Task

Where: International Space Station

Who: Astronaut

Performance Task: Help repair a satellite while working outside of the space station.

Biosuit Parts Needed

  1. Helmet that allows for breathing, protection from micrometeoroids and vision of task at hand
  2. Gloves that protect from the extreme cold and micrometeoroids

Performance Test Explained:

Test will consist of the student wearing the helmet and gloves and putting together a Lego design with nothing but tweezers and a small hammer.

Biosuit Model Performance Task

Where: Antarctica

Who: Glaciologist

Performance Task: Collect rock samples frozen in a large chunk of ice.

Biosuit Parts needed:

  1. Gloves to withstand the freezing temperatures of handling ice
  2. Tool(s) that can break through an ice block and extract rock samples.

Performance Test Explained:

Test will consist of a large block of ice that has had many rocks frozen within it. Students will work with their hands, protected by gloves they’ve created and use the tool(s) they constructed to retrieve the rocks from the ice.

Biosuit Model Performance Task

Where: Pacific Ocean

Who: Deep Sea Biologist

Performance task: Collect specimens from 600 meters deep in the Pacific ocean to be researched in your lab.

Biosuit Part needed:

  1. A tool that can be manned from a “submarine” that can locate specimens in pitch black water, and safely collect them and bring them back inside the submarine.

Performance Test Explained:

Test will consist of a large plastic bin with water dyed black that contains rocks, sand, and plastic fish at the bottom. Students will construct a tool that can see underwater and collect a specimen while keeping it alive and returning it to the outside of the bin.

Biosuit Model Performance Task

Where: Oil Spill Location in Gulf of Mexico

Who: Hazardous Material Technician

Performance Task: remove oil from body of water, while also trying to save wildlife affected by the spill.

Biosuit parts needed

1. Helmet or mask and gloves for breathing and handling hazardous materials

2. Tools to collect oil and wildlife, as well as dissolvent for the oil that can clean wildlife.

Performance Test Explained:

Test will consist of a bin of water that contains an “oil spill” (vegetable oil and food coloring) as well as small stuffed birds, and students will need to clean up as much oil as possible wearing their mask/helmet and gloves and using the tools they created.
