Catalog Description:4 Credits (3 hrs. lec., 3 hrs. lab.) A study of the structure and function of the human body. Emphasis will be given to the study of cells and tissues and anatomical and physiological interrelationships of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. Designed primarily for students entering health careers. (2607075103)

Course Objectives:

  1. Describe and practice all lab safety precautions.
  2. Identify important anatomical structures in the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and endocrine systems on laboratory models, diagrams, and/or dissection specimens.
  3. Demonstrate skills in basic microscopy and identify various cells and tissues.
  4. Apply the principles of chemistry to the human body.
  5. Examine the interrelationships between anatomy and physiology in each of the covered organ systems.
  6. Explain the principle of homeostasis and the major control mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis.
  7. Analyze the interactions of the organ systems in maintaining homeostasis in the human body.
  8. Use a vocabulary of anatomical and medical terms relative to the human body.
  9. Employ productive teamwork in laboratory activities.

ABSENCES AND MAKE-UPS: Class attendance is required and the student is responsible for all material covered. In case of prolonged absences, the instructor should be notified. Withdrawal from the course is the student’s responsibility. THE INSTRUCTOR WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY WITHDRAW A STUDENT FROM CLASS. If you quit coming to class and do not contact the registrar to drop the class, a grade of "F" will automatically go on your transcript.

If an emergency results in a student missing an exam, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor immediately to be eligible for a make-up exam. Notify the Instructor prior to the day of the test if you are unable to attend class. These exams will be taken in the assessment center on the student’s own time within one week of the assigned test date or a zero will be given for the test grade. Note that Lab Practical Exams cannot be made up.

Academic Integrity: The Lone Star College upholds the core values of learning: honesty, respect, fairness, and accountability. The system promotes the importance of personal and academic honesty. The system embraces the belief that all leaners—students, faculty, staff, and administrators—will act with integrity and honesty and must produce their own work and give appropriate credit to the work of others. Fabrication of sources, cheating, or unauthorized collaboration is not permitted on any work submitted with the system.

The consequences for academic dishonesty are determined by the professor, or the professor and academic dean, or the professor and chief student services officer and can include but are not limited to:

  1. Having additional class requirements imposed
  2. Receiving a grade of zero or “F” for an exam or assignment
  3. Receiving a grade of “F” for the course
  4. Being withdrawn from the course or program
  5. Being expelled from the college system

Any alleged violation or flagrant disregard of LSC rules and regulations shall be brought to the attention of the chief student services officer, who will initiate an investigation of the situation. After a complete and thorough investigation, the chief student services officer will determine the course of action. Discipline may result in expulsion. The decision of the administrator may be appealed to the college discipline committee. The complete discipline policy may be found online at

General:

1. All quizzes & exams will be retained by the instructor and not returned to the student.

2. Students should observe all safety rules in the lab & use care in; handling tools & equipment. Please dress appropriately for lab & consider the fact that we will be using a variety of chemicals and stains.

3. If you are a disabled student, you must be certified by the counseling office before the end of the first week of classes to receive special consideration by the instructor.

4. The instructor retains the right to make exceptions to these rules under special circumstances.

5. Cell phones turned off and not used during class or testing. No drinks or food in class or during testing.

Evaluation:

Three lecture exams and one comprehensive final exam will begiven during the term to evaluate lecture materials. Each exam may consist of some multiple choice questions, some T/F, some fill in the blank, some essay questions. Examsmay betaken early ifarrangements are made ahead of time.

Three lab practical exams will be conducted during the semester. Questions on the lab practicals are all fill-in-the blank questions. All answers must be written clearly and spelled correctly.

There will be regularly scheduled quizzes over vocabulary and anatomy. These will be taken at the beginning of the lecture period. Two of the lowest quiz grades will be dropped. If the dropped quiz is better than a “C” 5 bonus points will be awarded to the final grade for each quiz dropped with a C or better grade.

In addition, lab reports covering various aspects of human physiology will be turned in for points following assigned labs. All lab reports turned in on time and finished could add up to120 points (points over 100 are 20 bonus points).
