Course Description:

This lab is designed to enhance the student’s overall understanding of human anatomy and physiology by emphasizing structural and functional relationships. It provides experiments, demonstrations, dissections and model study covering cells, tissues and the integumentary, skeletal, muscle and nervous systems.

This course is currently required for students in KSU Nursing and HPS Programs. It can NOT be applied as credit towards a Biology major, nor can it be used to satisfy the General Education Science requirement.

Anatomy & Physiology Course Objectives:

1. Define appropriate terminology to effectively communicate information related to anatomy and physiology.

2. Recognize the anatomical structures and explain the physiological functions of body systems.

3. Recognize and explain the principle of homeostasis and the mechanisms used to control physiological systems in the human body.

4. Explain how anatomical relationships apply to physiological functions.

5. Recognize and explain the interrelationships within and between anatomical and physiological systems of the human body.

6. Recognize connections between knowledge of anatomy/physiology

and real-world situations, including healthy lifestyle decisions and homeostatic imbalances.

7. Demonstrate laboratory procedures used to examine anatomical structures and evaluate physiological functions of each organ system.

8. Use quantitative reasoning to interpret anatomical and physiological graphs and data.

BIOL 2221 is a co-requisite or pre-requisite for this course. Students must be currently registered for or have completed the course with a grade of “C” or higher.

Grading: Midterm Practical Exam 42.5%

Final Practical Exam 42.5%

Participation (Attendance & Assignments) 15%

Grade Scale: A 90%

B 80 – 89%

C 70 – 79%

D 60 – 69%

F 59%

Practical Exams:

Midterm and final exams will include multiple question stations utilizing models, dissections, slides, demonstrations & diagrams. Exam dates are indicated on the Lab Schedule and will be given during the regularly scheduled lab times. Questions will include fill-in-the-blank, short answer and/or multiple choice format.

Any student with an unavoidable & documentable absence from a lab exam must contact the instructor to arrange a make-up exam comparable to the lab practical exam. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor prior to or within 24 hours after the scheduled exam time. The student must present documentation of an unavoidable absence prior to being allowed to take the make-up exam. Acceptable excuses are at the instructor’s discretion.

One of the following options will be utilized for the make-up exam, at the instructor’s discretion:

1.  If possible, the student will be rescheduled to complete the practical lab exam with another lab section during exam week.

2.  A comparable make-up practical lab exam will be arranged by appointment with the instructor.

3.  A substituted written or computerized on-line version of the lab exam will be arranged by appointment with the instructor. This option will utilize photos and diagrams of lab models, dissections and slides in lieu of the actual lab practical set-ups.

Participation:

The participation portion of the grade will consist of attendance during the entire lab period, participation in & completion of all assigned activities, completion of all written assignments and maintenance of laboratory work station & equipment.

Attendance:

Lab attendance is REQUIRED. There are 10 labs during which attendance will be taken. Each student is responsible for signing the attendance sheet during each of the 10 lab sessions. Absences from 3 laboratory sessions will result in an automatic failing grade, regardless of completed work or accumulated grades. The labs for which attendance will be taken are indicated on the Lab Schedule.

Any student missing a lab session is required to contact the instructor prior to or within 24 hours after the scheduled lab time. A student missing his / her registered lab section can attend another lab section with permission from the instructor. (Attending another lab section is dependent upon the seats available in the lab). If the student is unable to attend another lab section, documentation of an unavoidable absence (determined at instructor’s discretion) is required in order for the student to prevent a reduction in participation points. The student is responsible for obtaining any material covered during missed lab sessions.

Activities:

Each student is required to read the assigned exercises in the lab manual prior to each lab in order to be prepared for the upcoming lab. The assigned readings are listed on the Lab Schedule. Activities to be completed during the lab period may consist of studying models or slides, dissections and / or performing wet labs.

Written Assignments:

During each lab session, students are required to complete and present their own written assignment to the instructor by the end of the lab period in order to receive their participation points. Assignments that are partially finished will receive no points. The written assignments are listed on the Lab Schedule. Each student is required to keep any graded assignments until their final grade has been posted in order to ensure their final grade is correct.

Accommodations:

Any student with a documented disability or medical condition needing academic accommodations of lab-related activities or schedules must contact the instructor immediately. Written verification from the KSU disAbled Student Support Services is required. No requirements exist that accommodations be made prior to completion of this approved University documentation. All discussions with the instructor will remain confidential.

Cheating and Plagiarism (Academic Integrity):
Every KSU student is responsible for upholding the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct, as published in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. Section II of the Student Code of Conduct addresses the University's policy on academic honesty, including provisions regarding plagiarism and cheating, unauthorized access to University materials, misrepresentation/falsification of University records or academic work, malicious removal, retention, or destruction of library materials, malicious/intentional misuse of computer facilities and/or services, and misuse of student identification cards. Incidents of alleged academic misconduct will be handled through the established procedures of the University Judiciary Program, which includes either an "informal" resolution by a faculty member, resulting in a grade adjustment, or a formal hearing procedure, which may subject a student to the Code of Conduct's minimum one semester suspension requirement. If you are caught cheating and/or plagiarizing, you will receive a “0” for that assignment & the KSU Judiciary Program & Biology Department Chair will be notified.

Withdrawal Policy:

The Withdrawal Policy as stated in the college catalog and the current schedule of classes will be strictly followed. The last day to withdraw from the course with a grade of W is Wednesday, March 13, 2013. The instructor will not initiate withdrawals. Students who fail to attend and complete the course successfully will receive a grade of F unless they complete the procedure referred to in the above publications.

Due to the co-registration policy stated above, if a student withdraws from the lecture course (BIOL 2221) they MUST also withdraw from the lab.

Admission directors of graduate and professional programs may view frequent withdrawals on your college transcript negatively. They also affect your eligibility for Hope Scholarship. With this in mind, please consult your KSU catalog and/or academic advisor prior to initiating a withdrawal.

Inclement Weather:

To find out about official school closings due to inclement weather or other emergencies, check the KSU website for announcements:

http://www.kennesaw.edu

Make-up procedures for missed labs due to campus closings will be posted by the instructor on Vista.

If school is open and a student is unable to attend their registered lab session due to inclement weather in their area preventing travel, the student is responsible for any missed material and is required to contact the instructor to make alternate arrangements.

Laboratory Safety & Procedures:

Ø  NO food or drinks allowed in the laboratory.
