Utah Olympic Park (UOP)Trail Narrative 5-9-2016

Summary

A new section of trail is needed to complete the UOP Trail System and connect it to the Mid- Mountain Trail on the northern edge of The Canyons Resort. A portion of the trail extending down to Kimball Junction exists now. This new section of trail could combine with a segment that links to Kimball Junction to provide another access point and needed connection to the Mid-Mountain Trail. This added alignment would also work to create connections to the Wasatch Crest Trail and future proposed extensions of the Mid-Mountain Trail.

Introduction

Extensive trail networks in Deer Valley, Park City, and Canyons Resorts provide access from Park City and western Summit County to the Wasatch Crest. Currently, there is no complete connection from the UOP to adjacent Kimball Junction, and the many trails that can be accessed from there. A trail now runs from Kimball Junction to just beyond the Olympic Park. A short section needs to be built to finish the connection.

User Importance

This trail could provide a critical link between the western extension of the Mid-Mountain Trail, to the trail system proposed to run along I-80 from Mountain Dell to Kimball Junction. This trail systemcouldbe easily accessed at several points along this major transportation corridor. This entire system could provide trails at lower elevations and a longer season, as well as higher terrain trails during warmer summer months. Many longer loop options could be possible once the trail system is complete, and access to longer regional trails like the Mid-Mountain and Great Western Trails would be possible from a number of locations.

Feasibility

The majority of this trail already exists. The remaining connection is short and may be readily accomplished. The connection is viewed by Summit County as consistent with their trail system plans and they are working towards facilitating the construction of the trail. The UOP is very much in favor of trail development on their property and are in support of completing this trail connection.

Impacts

Completing this trail would help to eliminate car trips and disperse users by providing additional access points to the popular Mid-Mountain trail, and add desired summer use options to the UOP.

Manageability

The trail will become part of the trail network maintained by Summit County.
