ii) Inclusion/ Exclusion criteria

Titles and abstracts were reviewed; studies that reported data on prevalence of preterm birth overall, or gestational age specific rates of preterm birth, case fatality, or impairment/morbidity associated with preterm birth were abstracted. Studies meeting preliminary inclusion criteria were excluded if: 1) they did provide data by relevant gestational age categories 2) selection of the birth cohort or preterm cases was not clearly defined, 3) substantial selection biases existed or cases were drawn from a specialized sub-population, 4) reported data from a previously included cohort, 5) they did not assess impairment using a validated clinician administered tool, or 6) the assessment of impairment was carried out before 18 months of age.
