Beth Brown - Reinsel Workshop

Reserve October 7th and 8th for a workshop with Beth Brown-Reinsel. Beth has been involved in many facets of the fiber arts as a spinner, basket weaver, dyer, knitter, former yarn shop owner, author, and knitwear designer, but teaching is her passion. She has worked in production as well as in creating and teaching courses and workshops both locally and nationally. She developed and implemented the correspondence course Traditional Ganseys for The Knitting Guild of America for 11 years, as well as owning Knitting Traditions, a mail order business of imported traditional yarns, for seven years. Beth has authored the book Knitting Ganseys, published by Interweave Press. Her articles and designs have been featured in magazines such as Knitters, Interweave Knits, Threads, Cast-On, and Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot.

Beth's workshops will be Twined Socks and Norwegian Mittens. Details to follow.

Coming to The Merc for the Fall Season

Sallie and Jan have just returned from The National Needleworks Association convention in Indianapolis. They attended classes with Myrna Stahlman (Lace Knitting), Kathleen Power-Johnson (Entrelac Knitting), and several Sally Melville classes. Sallie’s classes offered many learning experiences including the Faith Jacket. Sallie attended the Chris Bylsma class on the Crayon Box Jacket so we will all be proficient with this project at Knitters Mercantile.

In addition to the great classes, the yarns for fall are spectacular. We will be offering the Fiesta line of yarns. LaBoheme and LaLux are just two of their wonderful yarns. There are 10 new colors from Kraemer in Mauch Chunky. Alpaca from the Alpaca with a Twist. The new “Buckeye” yarns from Claudia in many different weights. Beautiful new shawl pins, both wooden and ceramic. The new shawl pins will look terrific on the Peacock shawl from Infiknits. And even better when it is knit in Zephyr yarn from Woolstock. Knit One Crochet Two will be sending us Paintbox yarn, perfect for the Faith Jacket by Sally Melville. We have new tapestry bags and needle cases from Ellen Originals and a new Mini Stash Packs from Unique Colors (Colinette). They contain yarn to make shawls that look similar to the Absolutely Fabulous Afghan. Also, Unique Colors is offering Cadenza, a washable wool in DK weight in wonderful colors. Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted, and Helen’s Lace will be arriving in August. Wool Around the World, formerly Babbajoos, will be delivering WoolPac in 12 great colors. This wool is perfect for the Einstein Coat. And lastly, the new yarn from On Line Linie 194 Solo. The yarn curls itself as you knit. Figure that out! And of course the hottest item...lighted needles. Now you can knit at the movies, in the bedroom…..

Not-Knit-Round Scarf: This piece is from Sally Melville's The Purl Stitch Book #2. It can be made either as a scarf or as a poncho. The stitch used is a variation of rib: 2 right - side knit sts sit on either side of a simple lace panel. It can be knit in different yarns weights and pieced together or left open as a scarf. If it's large enough it could be used as a skirt! This class meets on Wednesdays July 5th, July 12th and July 26th from 6-8 pm. The cost is $40.00 plus supplies. Instructor: Sallie

Side-to-Side Color Play Sweater: This sweater uses a worsted/heavy worsted wt. Wool as main yarn alternating with your choice of coordinating yarns. It is knit side to side creating a flattering vertical stripe. This project was designed to give the knitter as many construction choices as possible with little or no math. Garment width and length, armhole depth and sleeve length are independent of each other. 9 yards of yarn is enough to do a 2 row stripe, making this the perfect project to incorporate stash yarns. We will discuss yarn properties and how the use of wool for the main yarn stabilizes the sweater to prevent sagging and bulging that can occur when you mix yarns and texture/fiber contents. It is worked at 4 – 4.5 st/in. At this gauge, the tweed stitch pattern has a lovely drape and goes very quickly. The best part...there's minimal finishing! The workshop is Sat. Sept. 9th from 10 am – 2 pm. Cost is $40.00 plus supplies. Instructors: Frances Crowell & Linda Wolfe.

Sit ‘n’ Knit!

Men’s Night - On the third Wednesday of every month, from 6-8 pm, KM sponsors an evening just for men. Bring a project (or two) to work on, and spend some time with other guys who knit.

Monthly Meeting - Don’t forget that the Knitters Mercantile Monthly Meeting / Potluck is held on the fourth Monday of every month from 6-8 pm. Bring a friend, a project to knit or crochet, and a dish to share and join us for an evening of great food, great knitting, and plenty of great conversation.

Knitwitters - Stop by the store on any Friday morning from 10:00 until whenever, and join the Knitwitters, a group of knitters (and even some crocheters) who gather each week to sit and knit and share their knitting experiences. They really have fun...the noise level some Fridays is quite high!

Kids’ Knitting – Our kids meet at the store every Monday from 4 – 6 pm to sit and knit (and giggle). New members of all skill levels are welcome to drop in.

Let us know if you are interested in any of these or just come in. We would love to have you!

Knitting Events in the Community

We’re still accepting donations of afghan rectangles for blankets for a local battered women’s shelter. Just knit or crochet squares that are washable and measure 9”x7”—in any pattern—and drop them off at the store. We have a box of donated yarn or it’s a great way to use up some of your stash. Great way to try out some new stitch patterns. Connie Jones has been putting the Afghans together at a feverish pace and to date we have donated approx. 2 dozen.

In addition she is also crocheting lap robes for the chemo patients at St. Anne's Cancer Center. We have lost count of how many of these she has done. Thank you Connie and we know all the recipients of your wonderful work thank you too!

We are still accepting baby and preemie baby hats, sweaters and blankets for Touching Little Lives. Thank to all of you who have donated to this worthy group.

We also have the yarn and patterns needed to knit helmet liners for the troops. Bring in your finished product, and we’ll send them out for you.
