Introduction

Datalossoncloudplatformsismorecommonthanyoumightthink.AJanuary2013SaaSreportfromtheAberdeenGroupprovidedaclearpictureofdatalossinthecloud.Thesurveyshowedthat32%ofthecompaniesthatareusingSaaSserviceshavereportedlosingdata.

ReasonsforSaaSDataLoss

However,thisislessofareflection ontheplatformsthanitisonthepeopleusingthem.PlatformssuchasOffice 365rarelylosecustomerdata.Inalmosteverycase,datalossinthecloudistheresultofexternalforces.IntheAberdeenstudy,usererroraccountedfor64%ofdataloss.Thisisconsistentwiththefindings ofastudydonebytheITPolicyComplianceGroupthatshowedhumanerror,inoneformoranother,accountsfor75%ofalldataloss,whethercloud-basedoron-premises.
