Best Buy Sponsors “The Captain Planet Knowledge is Power” Contest

Atlanta Area Classes Educate, Inspire and Compete for Prizes

ATLANTA – September 21, 2009 – Captain Planet Foundation and Enviro Expo USA are excited to announce that Best Buy will sponsor prizes for The Captain Planet Knowledge Is Power Contest for students in the Metro Atlanta area. The contest is designed to provide youth with an outlet to inform and inspire others to live a more eco-friendly life by making small changes that have big implications. Contestants will "edutain" others in the form of a short, video Public Service Announcement answering the simple question, "Did you know?" as it relates to informing viewers of a statistic surrounding an environmental theme and then offering one or more suggestions to address the problem. Videos may be submitted between October 1 and October 29, 2009 by fall term elementary, middle or high school classes in Fulton, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Cobb and Dekalb counties only. Classes will be competing for Best Buy gift cards so that they have the ability to purchase their most needed items directly from the store.

“Best Buy is pleased to partner with Enviro Expo USA and Captain Planet Foundation,” said Leo Raudys, senior director of environmental affairs at Best Buy. “As the nation’s number one consumer electronics retailer, it’s our responsibility to do everything we can to promote environmental sustainability, and help educate consumers on ways to achieve this.”

To enter the contest, videos must be uploaded through vimeo.com, tagged “captainplanetfdn” and placed in the Captain Planet Foundation Channel. Guests to the Vimeo site may start marking a video as a “like” as soon as it is uploaded. Therefore, the longer the video is online, the greater chance it has at winning. Contestants are also encouraged to promote their video to increase views. Only one video per class is allowed, and classes must be from the fall 2009 term. Multiple videos per school are allowed. Teachers are required to fill out an entry form located on the Captain Planet Foundation website prior to Video submission.

Three videos in each category (elementary, middle and high school) with the most “likes” will be ranked, in order of popularity, to determine the winner. Each category will have a first, second and third place ranking with coordinating prizes provided by Best Buy. First place winners in each category will receive a $500 gift card, second place winners in each category will receive a $250 gift card and third place winners in each category will receive a $150 gift card. In addition, each video meeting the outlined requirements will be shown at the Enviro Expo USA on November 14 and 15, 2009. The winners will be announced at the show on November 14, 2009. The videos will be available on the Captain Planet Foundation and Enviro Expo USAwebsites for approximately 60 days.
