Beowulf Project #2: Journal Writing

(Final Project due: ______)

Learning Targets:

● I can use the text to decipher the scene and synthesize my knowledge into an

interesting picture and journal page of description.

Directions: One page journal entry with border illustrations for each of the three main events in Beowulf (Grendel, his Mom, and the Firedrake). This journal should be written from one participant's perspective (your choice, but pretend this character was at all three events, so it could be a soldier or villager, blacksmith, etc.) In total you will have three perspective journal entries, one for each of the three mentioned events.

Grading Rubric:

Excellent
(4 pts.) / Great
(3 pts.) / Needs Work
(2 pts.) / Incomplete or Poor (1 pt.)
Description of Event / Descriptions from events should each total 1 page typed or in pen. Creative details and perspective make the reader feel like the spectator was actually at the event. / ¾ page description of event. Creative details, but could have used more detail to really make description come alive. / ½ page description of event. Little creativity in details. / ¼ page description of event. No creativity in details, seems short and rushed.
Word Choice / Word choice is detailed and descriptive. Creative vocabulary appropriate to the context of the events. / Word choice was adequate for each event, however it could have been more creative. / Word choice needs work. Lack of creativity in word choice, functional. / Limited vocabulary, writer searches for words to convey meaning. No creativity.
Voice / Your voice is expressive and engaging. Your perspective sounds like you actually witnessed the event, sounds like a thane. / Sounds sincere, but lacks creativity in descriptions and perspective. / Voice is not genuinely engaged, committed, or involved. / Little to no voice evident in writing. Details come across boring and as if writer didn't care about topic.
Border Illustrations / Each scene has colorful border illustrations that accompany each description. / Missing some illustrations on border, lacks some detail and color. / Little illustrations on border, little to no color or detail. / No border illustrations.
Conventions
(spelling, grammar, punctuation) / Writing has been proofed for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. No glaring errors. / A few spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors in writing. / Errors distract from writing. Many spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation problems. / Grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation need a lot of work, too many errors.
