Band Karate

Throughout the school year, students will earn “Band Karate” belts based on the satisfactory completion and mastery of the skills listed below each color belt .

For every belt earned, a plastic zip tie will be given in that color and can be placed on the student’s instrument case—watch the collection grow as each belt is earned!

Belts must be earned in the order listed below; no skipping levels!

Students can choose to attempt to earn their belts during the last few minutes of their regular lesson, before school, or at the end of the school day.

Students may complete the belts at their own pace, although they are expected to achieve BLACK BELT “BAND NINJA” status by the end of the school year.

When a student has earned his/her Black Belt, he/she will be recognized school-wide for that achievement!

SECOND YEAR: WHITE BELT

  1. Identify, define, and be able to explain:
  2. Eighth notes
  3. Time signature
  4. Lesson 6--# 5
  5. Lesson 7--#4, 5, and 6.

SECOND YEAR: YELLOW BELT

Maintain all skills from previous belt, PLUS:

  1. Identify, define, and be able to explain:
  2. Piano/Forte
  3. 1st and 2nd endings
  4. Eighth rests
  5. Dotted quarter/eighth
  6. Lesson 8-- #5
  7. Lesson 9-- #2 and 4.

SECOND YEAR: ORANGE BELT

Maintain all skills from previous belts, PLUS:

  1. Identify, define, and be able to explain:
  2. Flam
  3. Tempo Markings (Andante, Allegro)
  4. Sixteenth notes
  5. Lesson 10-- #5
  6. Lesson 11-- #1 and 4.

SECOND YEAR: GREEN BELT

Maintain all skills from previous belts, PLUS:

  1. Identify, define, and be able to explain:
  2. Flam
  3. Tempo Markings (Andante, Allegro)
  4. Sixteenth notes
  5. Lesson 10-- #5
  6. Lesson 11-- #1 and 4.

SECOND YEAR: BLUE BELT

Maintain all skills from previous belts, PLUS:

  1. Identify, define, and be able to explain:
  2. Eighth/Sixteenth combinations (Raspberry, Jellybean)
  3. Lesson 13--#6
  4. Lesson 14—Two of a Kind (pick top or bottom)

SECOND YEAR: PURPLE BELT

Maintain all skills from previous belts, PLUS:

  1. Identify, define, and be able to explain:
  2. Flam taps
  3. Eighth note roll
  4. Lesson 15-- #3 and 5.

SECOND YEAR: RED BELT

Maintain all skills from previous belts, PLUS:

  1. Identify, define, and be able to explain:
  2. Quarter note roll
  3. Lesson 16-- #3 and 4.
  4. Lesson 18-- #4

SECOND YEAR: BROWN BELT

Maintain all skills from previous belts, PLUS:

  1. Lesson 20-- #2, 3, and 6 (top or bottom)

SECOND YEAR: BLACK BELT!

Maintain all skills from previous belts, PLUS:

  1. Lesson 21—#1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
