District Overview
The BHASD guidance/school counseling program addresses the academic, career, personal/social and emotional needs of students in grades K-12. The program is committed to helping student eliminate obstacles that may inhibit their success. This is done through individual counseling, small group counseling, classroom lessons, consultation and collaboration with school faculty/staff, parents, and the community.
Grade 5 Description
In grade 5, students will build upon the foundation of skills that they acquired in 4th grade. The students are exposed to different situations, lessons, and activities in a variety of settings throughout their school days. It is through these interactionsthat they are able to learn and further develop the skills,they will need in becoming a contributing member of society. The program focuses on the 3 domains of the American School Counselor Association’s national standards for students. These domains include Academic Development, Career Development, and Personal/Social Development.

Being A Bucket Filler
Unit Overview/Essential Understanding:
In being a bucket filler, students review what the term means, how they can apply it to their everyday life, and how relating and living up to the concept will make them a better person. They are exposed to a variety of lessons and activities that help them understand the concept more, and how to apply it to their everyday lives. The concept is utilized and carried over into every part of their school day.

The students will know that:
  • being a bucket filler means you are doing and saying nice things
  • that if you are being mean, you are being a bucket dipper
  • if someone is dipping into your bucket, you must get out your lid

Unit Title:
Character Education
Unit Overview/Essential Understanding:
In grade 5, students take a deeper look into the many different positive character traits. These traits include, but are not limited to responsibility, respect, trustworthiness, caring, fairness, and citizenship. The students will learn and reflect on the choices they make, with an understanding that these choices make their character what it is. The bucket filling program serves as a catalyst in teaching and instilling these positive traits in the 5th grade student body.

In 5th grade, students have a foundation of different types of social skills. They have ample opportunity to utilize these skills on a daily basis. These skills are enhanced through classroom lessons and practiced on a regular basis in a variety of settings. The social skills that are emphasized are communication, problem solving, nonverbal communication, expressing your feelings, managing conflict, listening, standing up for yourself, caring about yourself and others, and being part of a group. The school wide Bucket Filler Program promotes all of these skills.

Bullying
Unit Overview/Essential Understanding:
In the 5th grade Bullying Unit students revisit what bullying is, how it is reported, and what they can do to minimize it from happening. The Bucket Filling Program is utilized in conjunction with the Bullying unit, as an anti-bullying campaign. The students participate in a wide variety of lessons/activities, that teach them about similarities/differences, strengths/weaknesses accepting others, and conflict resolution.

In the 5th grade Careers Unit students will have more of an awareness on how many different types of careers there are, be able to identify the factors that will help them determine the best career choice, and understand that the choices they make now will have an impact of their career path.
