Assignments for Independent Study

Reinforcement of material from last week

·  Step 1: Are you still comfortable using hem…hem de, ne…ne de, ya…ya da, and dA…dA? Use each of these correlative conjunctions in a sentence.

·  Step 2: Can you still describe people’s personality and physical traits, and discuss their suitability for a job?

·  Step 3: Are you still actively using beri, başka and +DIr? Try forming a sentence with each.

Unit 20: Grammar Review

·  Step 1: Work through the review exercises in Unit 20 as needed, focusing on grammar or vocabulary that challenges you. This is a great diagnostic to see where you can strengthen your Turkish skills. Write down any questions for your tutorial.

Talking about Plans and Holidays

·  Step 1: Listen to, perform aloud, and memorize the dialogue and supplementary vocabulary in Unit 21, Section 1.

·  Step 2: Complete the substitution drills, and read the box, “Türkiye’deki tatil ve bayramlar.”

·  Step 3: Watch the CultureTalk Turkey videos:

As always, listen to the videos twice before reading the transcription, and again before reading the translation. Although some grammar and vocabulary will be unfamiliar, practice identifying common topics based on context, and familiar words and phrases.

·  FOR TUTORIAL: Write one new dialogue similar to the one in ET, Unit 21, Section 1. This dialogue should be at least 15 lines long, and incorporate at least three of the cultural expresions from Unit 21, Section 4. Be sure to use the optative at least 3 times.

The Optative (expressing wishes, desires, fears, and suggestions.)

·  Step 1: In Unit 21, Section 2, study and memorize how to form and use the optative. Remember to read all Turkish examples aloud.

Tip! Be sure to memorize the listed ‘stock expressions’ using the optative! These will come in very useful.

·  Step 2: Complete all of the exercises in Unit 21, Section 2, speaking your answers aloud.

·  FOR TUTORIAL: Write 5 sentences using the optative.

Important Holidays and Cultural Expressions

·  Step 1: Read the short paragraph about Turkish Holidays in ET, Unit 21, Section 3, and answer the reading comprehension questions.

·  Step 2: Speak aloud and memorize the cultural expressions in ET, Unit 21 Section 4, and complete the exercise that follows.

Note: After basic social niceties, these cultural expressions are some of the most important phrases you will learn in Turkish. Next time someone sneezes at your conversation session, be ready with a “Çok yaşa!”

·  Step 3: Read aloud the passage in Unit 21, Section 5: Reading, about a holiday in Sinop. (If you don’t know where Sinop is, be sure to look it up! ) Pay special attention to the italicized adjectives.

·  Step 4: Complete the listening exercise in Unit 21, Section 7.

·  FOR TUTORIAL: Write out the exercise in ET, Unit 21, Section 8. This paragraph should be at least 12 sentences long.

·  FOR TUTORIAL: Write a short paragraph (at least 10 sentences) about your vacation plans.

Intensive Adjectives

·  Step 1: Speak aloud and memorize the intensive adjectives in ET, Unit 21, Section 6.

·  Step 2: Watch the Turkish Grammar Video

o  Adjectives & More: “Intensive” Adjectives

·  FOR TUTORIAL: Write a dialogue in which one of the interlocutors enthusiastically regales his/her friend with descriptions of everything s/he saw on his/her latest vacation. Be sure to use as many intensive adjectives as possible! This dialogue should also be at least 10 lines long. Be prepared to act this dialogue out.

Vocabulary note:

·  In addition to the vocabulary from the sections covered by this week’s Study Guide, you should begin mastering the vocabulary listed at the end of Unit 21.

·  Remember, for all new vocabulary ALWAYS:

·  Make Flashcards and review the vocabulary repeatedly.

·  Make sure you can translate the words from English to Turkish and vice versa.

·  Practice using vocabulary in phrases.

·  Practice using each word in a sentence.

·  Complete dictation exercise 31 on the Turkish Dictation Exercises website. Listen to the dictation once in its entirety. The second time you listen, write down what you hear. The third time, check what you have written. Check your own work. Be prepared to write out a dictation based on these exercises at your tutorial.

Conversation Session Preparation Guide

·  Be prepared

·  Be prepared to drill, practice, and perform any of the exercises assigned in the textbook.

·  Be prepared to take any part in the discussion exercise in ET, Unit 21, p. 125 (p. 433).

·  Be prepared to answer questions about the short passage in ET, Unit 21, Section 3, p. 131 (p. 439).

·  Be prepared to take part in discussion exercise in ET, Unit 21, Section 3, p. 131 (p. 439).

·  Be prepared to take part in any parts of the dialogue.
