Adjusting to home

Just as you adjusted to life in Australia when you first arrived, you will have to get used to living back home, which may not be the same “home” that you left. While you may be looking forward to going back home, there may also be things about living in Australia and studying at JCUB that you will miss, especially your friends.

Being prepared for reverse culture shock will assist you with your re-settlement into life at home. Use the same strategies you used when you first arrived, such as:

  • Be patient. You will readjust, be it to the crowd, traffic, noise, living with your parents, or just being at home again, but it does take time
  • Take into consideration that while you have been in Australia, you, your family and friends have undergone changes. Be prepared for these.
  • Share your Australian experiences with your family and friends but also allow for them to share what they experienced while you were away
  • Allow yourself to feel sad about the things that you have left behind and miss, e.g. your friends
  • Maintain confidence in yourself
  • Remain in contact with the friends you made while studying at JCU Brisbane campus.
