Minimum Qualifications

  • Psychology majorJunior or Senior status during the 2017-18 academic year
  • Completed a minimum of 9 units in Psychology coursework

(at least 6 units at the U of A)

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative and Psychology GPA
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Highly dependable and punctual
  • Ability to give 2 semester (Fall 2017 and Spring 2018) commitment to the Psychology Peer Mentor Program
  • Mandatory Meet and Greet with Advising Staff Thursday, May 4th, 2017 from 11-12
  • Able to participate in a mandatoryone day training session on Wednesday, August 16th, 2017 from 9-4 and a mandatoryone day training session on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 from 9-4

Job Description/Responsibilities

  • Assist the Psychology Department's Academic Advisors in mentoring undergraduate Psychology majors
  • Assist in developing class curriculum
  • Co-facilitate 1-hour weekly classes(class times are dependent on mentor’s schedule) on topics such as:
  • Different fields of Psychology
  • Independent study/practicum opportunities
  • Graduate school overview
  • Resume writing
  • Interviewing
  • Learning styles and study strategies
  • How to develop relationships with faculty members, networking
  • Overview of curriculum requirements for the Psychology major and how to pick a minor
  • Campus resources
  • Provide accurate and reliable information regarding all of the above topics
  • Meet with mentees at least two times a month during the fall and spring semesters
  • Attend weekly staff meetings (time and day to be determined)
  • Keep detailed and accurate notes in student files
  • Complete course assignments including journals and journal article reviews

Peer Mentors can:

  • Earn a total of 6 units of Psychology practicum credit (-94 series, course number dependent upon the student's class standing) during the fall and spring semesters (3 credits in Fall 2017 and 3 credits in Spring 2018).
  • Receive valuable training and experience working in a University setting
  • Learn basic counseling skills (interviewing, reflective listening) as well as skills and competencies necessary to be an effective and knowledgeable mentor
  • Become more involved with the Psychology Department and other departments on campus
  • Obtain valuable information to prepare for graduate school in Psychology or other areas of interest

  • One reference form filled out by a faculty member, graduate student, or professional in the community familiar with the applicant’s personal characteristics and interpersonal skills

Upon submission of application materials, applicants must also sign up for an individual interview with the Psychology Advising Staff. As part of the interview you will need to prepare and conduct a 3-5 minute presentation on how to establish the foundation for a successful mentoring relationship.
