Beach Mob Holiday

Program Resources

Games:

Joey Scout in the Pouch
Equipment needed – beach towel

The Joey Scouts hop around randomly. On a signal all lie on the floor with eyes closed. One of the Joey Scouts is covered with a beach towel. The others, on a signal, sit up, look around and try to guess which Joey Scout is hidden in the pouch.

Ball Game

Equipment needed – rope or chalk, white and coloured table tennis balls (they don’t hurt if you get hit)
Divide the Joey Scouts into 2 teams. The hall is divided in half – mark the half way point with chalk or rope. One team starts with the white balls, the other team starts with coloured balls. The aim of the game is to get all the balls over the rope into the other half and not let the opposing team get any of their balls across into your half. At the end of 5 minutes count the balls up (all colours). The final activity is to get the Joeys Scouts to sort all the balls back into the correct container.

Frisbee Golf

Equipment needed – laminated numbers, rope, Frisbees, score cards

Print out numbers 1-6 on A4 paper – 1 number per sheet. Laminate. Punch holes and thread rope, material, or ribbon through. Place the numbers around trees. This is your golf course. Joey Scouts take it in turns to see how many throws of the Frisbee it takes to hit the hole. Record the number of throws on golf card.

Lifesaver Relay

Equipment needed – 1 hessian sack per team
Divide the Joey Scouts into teams and line up in relay fashion. Place a hessian sack for each team at the other end of the hall. The first Joey Scout goes and stands near their hessian sack. On the word “go” each Joey near the sack grabs the sack and runs to the next Joey Scout in their team. The 1st Joey Scout then tows the 2nd Joey Scout back to the initial starting point on the hessian sack.

Feed the Shark

Equipment needed – shark box, bean bags
Joey Scouts take it in turn to feed the shark. The shark is a box with a hole cut out for the mouth. Make sure it is big enough for the bean bags to fit through. Paint the box – and add shark features. Joey Scouts take it in turn to feed the shark – throw bean bags in its mouth.

Fish in the Ocean

Equipment needed – 2 ropes
Place the two ropes parallel to each other some distance apart – this is the ocean. Select a Joey Scout to be the shark. The shark tries to catch other Joey Scouts who are fish, when they are caught; they then become sharks and help to catch more fish.

Walk: Treasure Hunt

  1. Print out several pictures on a beach theme and “hide” these along the route of your walk.
  2. Give each Joey a paper bag and ask them to collect beach pictures along the way. Make sure each Joey can find a beach picture.
  3. At the end of the walk, talk to the Joey Scouts about some of the pictures that were found on the walk. Stress the need to slip slop slap wrap etc.

  3. Add name in textas.
  4. Punch a hole in the top of the card.
  5. Add a safety pin.

Hawaiian Leis

Materials Needed:

  • Construction Paper
  • Colourful Straws
  • Yarn
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Draw and cut out many flowers from thick paper.
  2. Poke a tiny hole in the centre of each flower (this is where you will eventually thread the yarn through them).
  3. Cut a drinking straw into 4cm long segments (the exact length is not important) - you'll need a segment of straw between each flower.
  4. Cut a piece of yarn about 60cm long. Tie a thick knot at one end of the yarn. Thread the smallest flower through the other end of the yarn -- push it down to the knot. Then thread a segment of drinking straw -- push it down to the small flower.
  5. Continue threading flowers and straw segments. When the last flower has been threaded onto the yarn, tie the ends of the yarn together to make your necklace.

Wind Sock

Materials Needed:

  • A4 paper
  • Crepe paper
  • Sticky tape
  • Hole punch
  • String

Instructions:

  1. At the bottom of the A4 paper attach several crepe paper streamers with sticky tape.
  2. Make the A4 paper into a cylinder shape and staple together.
  3. Punch 4 holes in the end without the crepe paper streamers.
  4. Add string so the windsock can be hung up.

Beach in a Bottle

Materials Needed:

  • Empty water bottles with lids
  • Coloured water
  • Shells, sand etc to add the bottles

Instructions:

  1. Add shells, sand etc to the water bottle.

  3. Put lid back on bottle.

Joey Scouts Own

Introduction
Welcome to our Joey Scout’s Own.

When we became Joeys we made a promise to LOVE MY GOD. Over the next few minutes we will think about the wonderful things our God gives us.

We have so much to thank Him for.

We thank you for the new Joey friends we have made.

We thank you that our parents and carers have been able to spend the weekend with us.

We thank you for our Leaders – they make our time at Joeys lots of fun.

Prayer
The air we breathe, the friends we meet,

The walk to use our eyes and feet,

The things around us make us say,

Thank you, God, for each new day!

Song: All Things Bright and Beautiful
All things bright and beautiful

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful

The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,

Each little bird that sings,

He made their glowing colours,

He made their tiny wings.

All things bright and beautiful

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful

The Lord God made them all.

He gave us eyes to see them,

And lips that we might tell,

How great is God Almighty.

Who has made all things as well.

All things bright and beautiful

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful

The Lord God made them all.

Prayer
Thank you God, who loves us,

For every happy day,

For trees and grass and flowers and sun,

For friends to share our games and fun,

Thank you God, we love you.

Amen

Yarn: Making a Difference
Once there was a little boy walking along an ocean beach. The beach stretched for miles, literally as far as the eye could see. Every day there were millions of starfish dying on the beach -- creatures that had been washed up onto the beach by waves, but who had no way of returning back into the water. The little boy began picking up these small urchins, one by one, and returning them to the sea, thus assuring that they would live. An elderly man watched this performance, and as the little boy continued along the beach, the man spoke to him. "Little boy, why are you doing this? Can't you see that there are millions of these starfish dying here in the sun?" What you are doing can't possibly make a difference." The little boy looked at the man for a moment, and then reached down, picked up a starfish and returned it to the sea. "I made a difference to this one," he said. In small ways, every day, you can make a difference. Don't think about what can't be done; rather, focus on what you can do.

He is Everywhere

Each time we look up into the sky and watch the fluffy clouds drift by,

When we feel warm sunshine on our faces, or feel wind and rain,

When we watch the dark night turn into day or day into night,

Or see the seasons change like winter into spring;

When we hear the kookaburra laugh,

When we stop to look at a flower, or touch a leaf or see a tree,

All the time it is God whispering, “This is me”.

Everywhere you look and all the sounds you hear are signs of Him.

Because God made all the things and He is everywhere.

Prayer
Now, before I run to play,

Don't let me forget to pray

To God who keeps me through the night

And wakes me up with morning light;

Help me, Lord, to love you more

Than I have ever loved before,

In my work and in my play;

Thank you, God, for another day.

We ask your blessing on us all as we start another day of great Joey activities.

Guide us to use our hands to care, share and help all you have made.

Other Activities

Make Biscuits – Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

125 g butter

½ cup sugar

½ cup brown sugar, lightly packed

½ teaspoon vanilla

1 egg

1 ¾ cups self-raising flower

½ teaspoon salt

125 g chocolate chips

Method:

Cream together butter, sugars and vanilla. Add lightly beaten egg gradually, beating well after each addition. Mix in sifted flour and salt. Add chocolate chips and mix well. Shape teaspoonfuls of mixture into small balls, place on lightly greased oven trays, allow room for spreading. Bake in moderate oven for 10 to 12 minutes.

Makes about 45 very small biscuits.

Water Slide

Spread out a large sheet of plastic on a smooth, grassy area. Set up the sprinkler so that the water sprays onto the plastic. You could add some detergent or bubble bath to really get sliding. Wear swimming costumes. Add kids and away you slide.

Bubbles

Bubble Mix

10 parts water

1 part dishwashing liquid (good quality brand – such as Morning Fresh)

¼ part glycerine (available from the supermarket – in the medicines aisle)

Bubble Pipes

1. Film canister version: bore a hole in the side of a film canister, near the base, just big enough to fit a drinking straw. Put in a detergent, glycerine and water mix. Blow down the straw to make bubbles erupt from the canister.

2. Poly cup version: Cut Chux cloth into 10cm squares. Place a Chux square over the open end of a poly cup and hold in place with an elastic band. In the middle of the base, bore a hole with a pencil. Have the bubble mix in saucers or open bowls. Dip the Chux end into the bubble mix and blow through via the hole in the base of the cup. Should make long bubble sausages!
